I receive a return text right away.

Teach:Hey, let me call you, but I only want to talk about Jett, okay?

It’s all I want, too.

Me:Yeah, that’s fine. Believe me, I’m not in the mood to really bullshit around.

My phone rings right away and I pick it up, as if I’m sitting on it. I’m not far from that.

“Hello.” I’m a little more formal, because fuck, I’m destroyed by Jett thinking I didn’t want him.

“Stone, hey, you okay?” I guess when you’ve had crazy sex with one another, formalities are dropped.

“Did I get you at a bad time?” Code for—are you still out with the girl we both like?

“Nah, I just got home. You don’t sound great. Is everything okay? With you? With Jett?”

I can’t go deep tonight, not now. Not with him. I’ve got to know if there’s something he sensed or noticed in my son.

“Yeah, sorry for the late-night call, but Jett, was he okay today?”

He takes a second to answer me. “I didn’t notice any bad behavior if that’s what you’re asking, but as you may be aware”—he lets out a little snicker—“Jett is known already as the class jokester. He was quiet, withdrawn, very unlike him. I just chalked it up to him having a bad day or being tired. But since you asked, I thought maybe there might be more to it.”

“Ah, okay, glad to know. I won’t keep you, Gibson. Talk to you later.”

“Wait, Doc. Hold on. You sound out of sorts. I know we’re…well…we don’t have to rehash it, but I want to make sure you and Jett are all right?”

I’m just in enough of a mood that I can’t tolerate this on again one second and off again the next with him. I know I freaked him out, and my life is a tad unconventional, but this conversation won’t turn out well for either one of us if I don’t end it.

“You can’t have your cake and eat it, too, Teach. I’m not in the mood right now to overlook any arseholeness on your part, too. Where I normally find it endearing, I’ll find it annoying as fuck.”

He begins to snicker again. “Any arseholeness on my part. Do you forget who you are?” It may be meant as a joke to lighten the mood, but I can’t take his false hope tonight and hit end before I can say another word.

A text comes through immediately, and I know who it’s from.

Teach:Hey, I’m here to talk if you need it.

It’s short and sweet and to the point. I try to ignore him, but when another text comes through, I want to explode at the man.

Teach:By the way, thanks for the apple.
