Gabriel was like the Barista’s son, which was why he had been given a second chance to begin with. Cambriel was a different story, not related by blood to Lucifer or his son but…just as hurt by the curses they dealt with.

Cambriel could at least touch a human without killing them.

“He would have died if I’d let Lucifer take him in that form. He doesn’t recognize anyone when he’s like that,” the Barista whispered, walking over to me and Alex.

“He recognized you.”

“He did,” the Barista said, sighing heavily. “I’m so sorry, Jasper. I didn’t think this would follow you here. It shouldn’t have.”

“What are you going to do when he comes back?” I asked. “You still haven’t told me.”

“Kill him,” the Barista said, but we both knew that was a lie.

He wouldn’t do it. Couldn’t do it. Even after everything they had done to each other, neither one of them could bring themselves to end the other.

Lucifer had plenty of chances to. There had been moments through their time apart that he could have used the Barista’s weaknesses against him.

But, instead he just kept attacking everyone around him.

Alex let out a whimper, his body melting more against me.

I looked down, realizing that the warmth covering me was blood. “Fuck. He needs help.”

“Both of you do. I’m going to have to do the travel thing again, it’s the quickest way. Sorry, but we need someone who’s at least trained medically to help both of you.”

I nodded, feeling a stab of sadness.

Today had started out perfectly and had ended with all the darkness I had run from catching up to us.

I thought I could protect Alex, and I had failed.

“Jasper, this wasn’t your fault. It’s mine. All of this is my fault. The witches wouldn’t have targeted you unless they knew you came to me. I don’t know how they found us, but they did.”

I shook my head, looking up at him. “We can talk about it later. Let’s get him to safety.”

The Barista nodded and knelt down, wrapping his arms around the two of us and whisking us away.
