14ONE MONTH LATER

Alex

It had been a month since the fiasco and I had yet to say thank you to the creature that had saved me.

I walked into Creature Cafe, glancing around to look for the Barista. I was stopping by to pick up coffee for the lodge as a favor to Jasper. Driving his truck had been way more eventful than I had expected, and my legs wobbled a little as I went up to the counter.

It was the middle of the week and daytime, a lot quieter than what I had grown used to when visiting on the weekends.

A lot of things had changed already, but all of them were for the better. I’d decided to take a longer term break from being an architect, much to my firm’s dismay, to focus on the comics I wanted to write.

I was also planning on moving in with Jasper at the end of this month. We’d already started planning our ideal home— and I was knee deep in wood samples, tile samples, blueprints and everything else.

It was a dream come true.

Still, it bothered me I hadn’t been able to say thank you to the creature from that day.

Trixie waved at me, grinning. “Hey, stranger.”

“Helloooo,” I said, opening my arms.

She came around the counter, giving me a big hug. She was the cutest and sweetest, and since I’d been coming here more often— I enjoyed talking to her about everything.

“You’re so short,” I teased, patting the top of her head.

She rolled her eyes. “Surprise, I haven’t grown since you came into the cafe five days ago.”

I laughed. “Sorry, it’s just that I’m always surprised. And my mate is a big guy.”

“He is,” she giggled, going back around the counter. “What are you here for?”

“Beans for the lodge,” I said. “I have a question since you know all.”

Trixie snorted, raising a brow. She’d changed her hair again, going from bright pink to violet. It suited her, just like every other color in the rainbow did. She was a drop of sunshine, always on top of everything.

“I don’t know it all,” she said, smirking. “But I know the Barista isn’t back yet. He should be here in a few minutes.”

“The day all the stuff happened, there was a fallen angel…”

“Gray wings or black?” she asked.

“See, I told you that you knew everything,” I said, grinning. “Gray.”

“That’s Cambriel. I don’t know him very well, he won’t look at me or come into the shop,” she said, shrugging. “Same with Gabriel, though. Both of them don’t seem to like humans very much.”

“Well, Cambriel saved me and I want to say thank you,” I said.

“Hmmm…” she trailed off, frowning. “I don’t know. I guess we can ask B whenever he gets back from whatever thing he is doing now.”

I raised a brow. The last customer that was in here walked out the door, waving at the two of us and leaving us alone.

“Are you doing okay?” I asked.

Trixie froze, her sunny smile faltering for a moment. “Ah…just…Yeah. I’m fine.”

“Doesn’t sound fine,” I said. “You don’t have to tell me but I’m a safe space.”

“I just…the Barista said he’s going to close the cafe for the month in November but won’t tell me why. But I’m not stupid. I know it has to do with his ex. Literally everyone is clearing out of town for the month around that time,” she said. “Even you.”
