Page 50 of Little Risk of Fall

It was true. Jasper had casually booked us a stay at his lodge in California, per the Barista’s request, for the entire month of November.

“I’m just frustrated because I think he thinks he’s trying to protect me, but it just makes me feel like an outsider. I’ve worked with him for awhile, you’d think he’d be more honest.”

“I think he’s a monster at his core, sweetheart, and unfortunately he’s acting like a man. Have you tried asking him?”

“I’ve tried everything,” she said, shrugging. “It’s not even about the money. He already paid me an entire years salary in advance ‘just because’,” she said, making air quotes. “He’s like a sugar daddy except he’s a bitter tattooed Barista. With a creepy basement below the cafe.”

I snorted, and was about to quip back when the devil himself walked into the cafe.

“Hey, you two,” the Barista said. “Alex, I’ve got the beans in the back. I can help you load them,” he said, gliding past the two of us.

“Good to have you back,” Trixie said drily.

The Barista pulled off his sunglasses, raising a brow. “Did I miss something?”

“No,” she said. “We were just talking.”

He narrowed his eyes for a moment and then shrugged. “Okay. We might have guests soon, Gabriel is coming in to try and convince me to find him and Cambriel a human mate.”

“Oh, that’s fun,” I said. “Also, I need to tell Cam thank you for saving me.”

The Barista shook his head. “As kind as that is, Alex, he’s not the type to look for acknowledgment. Also, I’m not sure it’s a good thing. If Gabriel touches a human, they can die.”

“Well,” Trixie said, raising a brow. “Just do what you always do.”

“It’s not so easy,” he said, scowling.

Suddenly, I felt like a third wheel.

“I mean, it doesn’t seem hard. I matched Penny and Rum.”

“You got lucky,” he hissed, scowling even more.

Trixie turned to face him, cocking her hip. “Just admit that I did good about that.”

“No, I’m not admitting that,” the Barista said stubbornly. “Just because you’re friends with everyone on this side of the continent doesn’t mean you know how to match monsters and humans.”

Trixie was about to say something that I wish I could have heard, but the door to the cafe chimed again. Three people came in, chattering about coffee.

“Let’s go get the beans so I can come back and help,” the Barista said tightly.

“Alright,” I agreed.

I followed him past the counter, stealing a glance at Trixie.

Her sunny smile was plastered back on, and I felt my gut twist.

How much more would it take for the two of them to finally see they were meant to be together?
