“Of course,” she agreed, fighting a smile.

“—after I get a diamond—”

“God no. Ethically mined sapphire, please.”

“—after I get a sapphire, you would have to say yes.”

“Have to?” Mal couldn’t maintain a straight face. She threw her arms around Benson’s neck. He pulled her against him, careful of her ass.

“Don’t blame me, it’s on our list.”

“So you have to propose, and I have to accept, because of the checklist game.”

He cleared his throat. “I love you, Malvia.”

“And I love you, Sa—”

“Don’t.”

Mal laughed. “I love you, Benson. We should probably go on a date outside the club. You might not like non-submissive Mal.”

He shrugged. “I’m pretty easygoing. Most librarians are.”

“And I want to come visit you at the library, because I’m still not sure I believe you.”

“Then there’s only one thing to do—”

“Don’t ask me out to dinner.”

“—Let’s get some dinner.”

“That’s just rude, and you know it.” Mal glared at him.

Benson grinned. “What’s wrong? Why don’t you want to sit down to dinner?”

The emphasis on “sit” was comically drawn out.

Two hours later, each holding a Pink’s hot dog, they ate dinner standing up.
