He flashed her his signature, charming smile. “Things just got very interesting. It’ll be fun for you to be my girlfriend. It’ll spice up things.”

She shook her head. “You are crazy to think I’d go with everything that you just randomly make up.”

He tsked like she was being silly. “Doesn’t leave you much choice, sweetness. If I step away from this, Varun is going to come after you. He already suspects one of you to have been the one responsible.”

Her stomach dropped yet again, realizing she was getting caught up tighter and tighter into his web. “Fine. I’ll be your girlfriend… fake one. I hope you know how to treat your girl well.”

There was amusement in his eyes as she turned away to walk toward Vasavi and Ramya, and on a whim and out of sheer spite, she pretended to twist her ankle and fell to the floor with a loud wail.

“Nami,” she heard Ramya call out, but Rana was the first one to reach her.

“You okay?” he asked, and the concern in his voice wanted her to tell him she was fine, but she did not.

Instead, she looked up at him and whispered, “Time to show how much you care for your girl.”

Before he could fire back a smart response, Ramya and Vasavi were kneeling next to her. “What happened?”

“I got her,” she heard Rana say, and the next thing she knew, he had scooped her up into his arms, which made her squeal in surprise. He stood up, and on instinct, she wrapped an arm around his neck for support.

“What the heck are you doing?” She hissed. “Put me down.”

He smiled at the other students as he walked them to the nearby table. “I’m taking care of my girl,’ he said without looking at her.

“Oh my God! How cute. This should go on the newsletter,” she heard someone say, followed by a flash from the camera.

Great! Another picture on the Simha Newsletter.

She stayed quiet as he placed her on a chair and kneeled in front of her to inspect her ankle, knowing she was totally faking the fall. He pressed on one side and asked, “Does it hurt here?”

“No… I’m okay.” She tried to pull her leg away from him, but he would not let go. He looked at Ramya and Vasavi standing next to them looking concerned, and asked, “Can you find a bag of ice?”

“That’s not necessary,” Nami called out, but it was too late. The girls were already on their way to find ice.

“What are you doing?” She narrowed her eyes at him.

“Playing along.” He winked, and she knew he was having way too much fun at her expense.

She pulled her leg from him and stood up. “I’m fine.”

“Nami, sit. You need to ice your ankle,” Ramya called out, still looking concerned.

Nami sat down, avoiding his eyes, knowing very well they were mocking her. She learned another valuable lesson that day—not to probe him the way she did. It was hard to accept that it had to be his way or the highway.

Get on with the agenda, Nami! There is no getting back at this guy.

The universe was working against her, and she knew not to push her luck too far. She sat quietly as he took the bag of ice from Ramya and placed it on her ankle. She hissed under her breath in response to the cold, but Ramya mistook that as a response to being in pain and patted her shoulder.

“Rana, do you mind bringing Nami home after dinner?” Ramya pleaded.

“Absolutely!” He flashed her cousin the sincerest of smiles that gave her a ton of assurance that he was the perfect, responsible boyfriend. “I got her.”

“Okay, cool. Thanks,” Ramya said and added, winking at Nami, “You and I have a LOT to talk about.”

“I’ll see you guys later.” Nami waved enthusiastically and slumped her hand when they left the cafeteria.

“Sounds like a fun conversation you’ll have later.” He chuckled, still icing her fake injury.

Annoyed with how things transpired in a short time, she pulled on the ice pack. “Give me that.”
