“Your daddy is doing just fabulous, baby. You won’t believe it, but the case was dismissed.” With the state of mind Nami was in, she was confused as she processed the joy in her mother’s words.

“What are you saying, Ma?” Nami was sure she had to be dreaming.

“Yes, you heard it right.” Her mother let out what sounded like a cry of joy. “Your daddy’s childhood friend, who he had lost touch with years ago, helped us. They have such good connections that they were able to get to the bottom of the allegation in a day and prove your father’s innocence.”

“Who… who is—”

“You don’t know his friend, love. Your father and his friend, Dhanush Simha, had parted ways in some unfortunate circumstance, and now…” her mother paused like she was taking in the sight in front of her. “I’ve never seen your dad so happy. He is talking to his friend right now.”

“This is unbelievable.” Even as she said the words in her delirious state, she was connecting the dots.

“But… I thought it was the Simhas who had done this, just like they had taken away Daddy’s company before.” Nami’s mind was running on overdrive.

“Who in the world told you all that? That’s just ridiculous.” There was anger in her mother’s voice.

“Ma, Naani told me it had to be the Simhas since they had—”

“No. Never. The Simha family head, Dhanush’s father, was upset with your dad and had canceled some major contracts. But the Simhas are never into playing such cheap tricks.” Her mother paused like she was stepping away to a private space and added, “Don’t get me wrong when I say your grandma can be pretty melodramatic. I love her to death, but she is too quick to judge.”

Tears of joy welled in Nami’s eyes when it occurred to her that the only way his father’s friend could have known about what happened was if Rana had told him.

He was the one to get her father out of trouble!

“Ma, I need to go. I’ll talk to Daddy later.” She had to see Rana to beg him for forgiveness for being a crazy bitch and making up things.

She ended the call, and just as she was about to call Rana, she saw Ramya was calling her. “Hey, Ramya… I will call back,” she said, answering the call.

“No. You listen to me. Why did you turn yourself in? What was the need?” Ramya was shouting.

Nami shook her head. “Hold it. What are you talking about?”

“This is just stupid. Why did you have to turn yourself into security for the car damage case?” Ramya talked fast like she had to stop her cousin.

Nami’s head started to reel. “I… I did not. What are you talking about?”

“The newsletter was sent out a few minutes ago that the person responsible for the car vandalism turned themselves in as they saw that the campus security was closing in on them, and they will be expelled from Simha.”

“What the heck?” If this was all happening in her sleep, it was the most confusing nightmare.

“Yes, the news just came out to everyone. The security camera caught someone in that area during that time, but not actually damaging the car. And it is said that the person who confessed, even showed proof of a watch they had on while they left the parking lot. Although there was no actual evidence of the person doing the damage from the video,” Ramya read some of the details out loud and added, “Isn’t that your watch they are talking about?” Her cousin was impatient.

“Yes,” her voice was a hiss. “It’s not mine anymore.” Her heart was thudding as everything fell into place in her mind.

“What in the hell are you saying?” Ramya was beyond annoyed at that point.

“I gotta go. I need to find the guy who now not only owns the watch but also my heart.” She laughed. “I need to go.”

She ignored Ramya’s ongoing questions and ended the call. She unblocked Rana’s phone number and called him. To her utter disappointment, he was not responding to her phone call. If he turned himself in, does that mean he is in the custody of campus security? Was he arrested?

Horrified as to what would happen next, she ran toward the main administrative building. She had to stop the process even if it meant she would get kicked out of Simha. She couldn’t let a Simha be the one to be expelled.

Shortly after, she sat in front of Neelima Raj, yet again feeling like she was going to throw up on her desk. This time she was in the dean’s home office.

“Ms. Varma, let me make it very clear that no matter what the urgency, you will not do what you did this morning ever again.”

“Yes, Ma’am.” Nami was not proud of the fact she went straight to Neelima Raj’s private quarters and banged on the door, scaring her elderly mother and catching the dean off guard. “I had no other choice.”
