She shook her head. “No. I guess not.”

I nodded. “Okay. Just… Give us some time, love. We’ll find our way back to each other.”

“How do you know?”

My thumb brushed over her cheek. “Because we’re friends, Piper. And I kind of love you, remember? That doesn’t just go away because Carter found his sack.”

“Those are some pretty nancy wanker words there, Lombardi,” she said, lightening the mood just a little bit.

I gave her the smile I knew she needed. “I know, love. But sometimes I need to say them.”

“And sometimes, I need to hear them.”

“Hey! You’re not the only one.”

“I kind of love you, too, you know,” she whispered.

We stepped together out of nothing but pure habit. Faces were moved just in time to avoid our lips meeting. Hers pressed to my cheek and lingered. I fought to keep my hands in only appropriate place.

“Come on. We’ve got to get going.”

I didn’t stop to help her into the car for once. I couldn’t. If I touched her, I’d cross so many boundaries I’d let Mason fucking deck me.

Silence smothered us as we drove to school. My hands kept flexing on the steering wheel. I kept rubbing my chin. I would have lit up, but not with Piper in the car. I couldn’t bear it.

Finally, I cleared my throat. “So, being normal?”

“What about it?”

I shifted in my seat and told myself there was no harm in what I was about to suggest. “Well, Wednesday. Plans?”

“Other than school, no.”

“You want to help me tame the trouble, then?” I asked. “You know she’d love to misbehave for you.”

“Sure,” she answered. She’d turned tolook outthe window, but I heard the smile in her voice.

I nodded. “Okay. Good. Normal.”

“Normal.”

The way she said it, I could almost believe we could do it.
