Chapter Twenty-Three
Then don’t fucking moon over her.
There was some chick sitting in my lap, running her hand suggestively up and down the neck of my beer bottle. I was ignoring her and the significant amount of leg that was on show. Her other hand kept playing with the hair at the nape of my neck and I kept trying to pull it out of her reach.
She just laughed and leant her lips towards mine. I turned my face and took a drag of my smoke to find Rio watching me intently.
“What?” I snapped.
He shrugged. “I’m nearly out of smokes. How’s your stash?”
“Fucking poor.”
Steve appeared over the back of my chair. “Servo run?” he asked.
I looked to Rio, who gave a very ‘whatever, suits me’ shrug.
I stood up, not giving much of a fuck that the chick tumbled out of my lap with a frown.
“Hey,” she protested as I went to move past her.
“Take a hint,” Rio told her, passing her his beer before we headed out.
“Boys,” Jimbo called. “Calling it a night?”
I shook my near-empty cigarette packet at him. “Servo run.”
Jimbo threw me his wallet. “Baccie and a pack of rolls.”
I nodded. “Sure.”
“And treat yourself to something nice while you’re out.”
Had Jimbo’s not been my only place of refuge lately, I’d have told him to fuck off. As it was, I just nodded and pocketed his wallet.
Steve and Jake were laughing about something, needing each other to keep them walking. Rio and I wandered along behind. I shoved my hands in my pockets.
“Nice night,” Rio said.
“The fuck?” I huffed a humourless laugh as I kicked some rubbish out of my way.
“I’m trying here, man.”
“Like I’m not.”
“You’re barely here anymore!”
“I’m literally right beside you.”
“You’re here physically, but your head’s fucking miles away.”
“You’re just not fucking happy, are you? I stay home and you bitch at me. I come out and you bitch at me.”
“I’m not bitching at you.”
“You’re bitching at me.”
“I’m trying to help you.”
