At least she laughed as she sat up. “I did.”

I sat up behind and my body encased hers even closer than before. I surrounded her. I couldn’t tell if I wanted to keep her safe, or if I wanted her to keep me tethered to the ground. I could feel every single place she wasn’t quite touching. The anticipation of touching her was almost as good as I suspected touching her would be.

My nose skimmed the air by her cheek, her jaw, her neck.

“I can’t apologise…” I said softly.

She shook her head and I felt her lean into me. “Firstly, I’d just think you’d been abducted. Secondly, what the hell do you have to apologise for?”

“Being a slut?”

“Why would you possibly have to apologise to me for that?”

She was…right there…and I couldn’t do anything about it. “Because I was looking forward to hearing you admit you think I’m hot,” I whispered in her ear.

She turned her face to mine and the sides of our noses nearly bumped. With my little practise in the art of kissing, I couldn’t be sure that she wanted to kiss me, but I suspected it. It didn’t mean she was going to admit I was hot, though.

“Of course I think you’re hot, Roman. Anyone with eyes thinks you’re gorgeous. You are, objectively, beautiful and I am not ashamed to admit I am a woman with eyes.”

Why did everything have to be so simple with her? “Is that so?”

“Hadley shouted it last week because she was trying to get me to admit it.”

“You and Hadley were talking about me?”

“Yep.”

“What sort of stuff?”

She settled in like it was going to be a hell of a list. “Well, she thinks I’m your Everest, she expects Mason would fuck like a pro but you’d do it better, she thinks you’re the hottest guy in school, says you make any girl wet just looking at another, and if she lived next door to you that she’d be banging you on the regular.”

“Really? And I’m wasting my time here with you because…?” I joked.

She smiled and I knew she’d taken it the right way. “Very funny.”

“What’s an Everest?” I asked, nudging her nose with mine.

She laughed. “You know, Mount Everest? Unscaleable and all that. She thinks I’m the one girl you want but can’t have.”

Did Hadley Reynolds know me better than I knew myself?

“And that’s funny?” I asked.

“It’s absurd.”

Did it have to be? “Is it?”

“Isn’t it?”

I shrugged lazily. “Well, you’re certainly the one girl I could never have.” Which was true, but I didn’t want to be bogged down with that. “Mind you, she’s not wrong though.”

I felt her breath hitch “Not wrong about…?”

There were so many things I could say here. But I had to keep the mood light or I was going to forget my no touching policy.

“I fuck far better than a pro,” I told her.

She looked startled for a moment, then laughed and I couldn’t help joining her.

She honestly had brought me out of my funk and I could only thank her for that. But I couldn’t find the words. Aside from being very sure that they’d be words I’d rather choke on, nothing I could think of seemed good enough for her.

So I just brushed her hair back from her face and we looked at each other for a moment longer before she toppled us both backwards and said, “What do you know about constellations?”
