Chapter Ten
I’m Fucked. Figuratively and Literally.
I was feeling antsy. I kept shifting from foot to foot.
“Mads,” I whined. “Come on. I need to go.”
“Are you going down to the lake again?” she asked, brandishing her toy rifle like she was arse deep in the trenches.
I nodded and looked to Mum for help. No help was forthcoming. All I got was an amused smirk.
“And, I’m late, Mads,” I pressed.
“Itisquite past someone’s bedtime,” Mum said pointedly, and I knew that was the closest thing to help I was getting from her.
“Is it cold tonight?” Maddy asked.
“It’s pretty fu– It’s cold,” I answered.
Maddy’s mouth dropped open in a little ‘o’ and she ran to her room.
“Voluntary going to bed?” Mum tried.
“Unlikely,” I answered, and she shrugged resignedly.
“You need this!” Maddy cried as she came back in, brandishing something very pink at me.
I tried to focus on the object, but she kept waving it in my face incessantly. I finally grabbed her wrist gently and took the pink thing from her. It was a beanie.
“You have to wear it,” she insisted.
“Mads, I–”
She latched onto my legs. “You have to, or you’ll be cold!” she cried dramatically.
I sighed, knowing this was going to go a lot quicker if I just agree. “Sure,” I told her.
She pulled it out of my hands and forced me to kneel so she could put it on my head.
“Right. Sorted?” I asked and she nodded.
“Sorted,” she agreed.
“Good. I’m gone then.”
“Night, love,” Mum called, and I heard her trying to hide the humour in her tone.
I waved to them both and was in such a hurry to get to Piper that I didn’t get in my car, I just jogged on down to the lake.
She was standing on the shore, with her arms around her body. She turned and saw me, and I was a little bit embarrassed about the speed with which I made my way over to her.
I stopped in front of her and found she was smiling from ear to ear. “What?” I asked.
She was looking at my head. “What are you wearing?”
“Maddy refused to let me out of the house unless I put it on. And turns out it’s warm, so I decided not to take it off.”
She clapped a hand over her mouth, muffling out, “It is very cold tonight.”
