“I know. Your eyes were about to pop out looking at Ms. Myka’s bum.”

“What was that?” Myka asks.

“My brother here couldn’t stop looking at—”

“The changes our folks made to the home. Mum added some new knick-knacks and stuff.” Sebastian saved my goose with his clever and well-placed interruption. “How about we go clear the rest of the table, Jen?”

“No need, Bastian. I have the remaining items. Your mates are in there stowing the food away for keeping and Dad has just poured us all a nice taste of whiskey.” Our brother Stephen relays as he passes the dirties to Jenny. “Come on gents, let’s go catch up a bit before you all have to leave. Simon, how’s your girlfriend?” he asks.

I look back to Myka who is shaking her head. Her usual response when it comes to me and women. Except for this time, it’s not true. I continue into the living room and join the band and my dad for a bit of a nightcap.

MYKA

“Don’t worry about Simon. He’s always been a bit of a ladies’ man. When I was five, he took me to the shops just so he could meet girls. Such a scoundrel.”

“Jenny! Mind your tongue, young lady. Now run along and go get ready for bed.”

She scurries away, not before giving her mom a kiss on the cheek and saying goodnight to me.

“You have to forgive my daughter. She’s a bit like her father. Let anything come flying out her mouth.”

“It’s okay. It’s not like I haven’t heard people say worse things.”

“He’s really a good man. I think his skirt-chasing all started when his first girlfriend broke his heart. He was about sixteen and she left him for a guy in university. She was a bit of a tart anyway.”

“Mum, for bloody sakes. Don’t scare Myka away,” Simon says when he enters the kitchen.

I laugh at his child-like embarrassment and continue to towel off the remaining dishes, putting them away once dry.

“Oh, quit acting innocent, Simon. You weren’t without your own faults.”

“Don’t worry, Mrs. Ashton, I know about his behavior, that's why his boss wanted me to help them out. They all have a bit of a bad boy persona back in California.”

“Myka, no need to bore my mother with our antics.”

I raise my hands. “Fine I won’t say anything.”

“Mum, Dad said he needs you for something.”

“Oh, bloody hell. The man can barely wee straight without needing me for something.” She rushes off to see what was so urgent.

I laugh hard at her comment.

“My folks are comical.”

“Yes, they are. And they’re sweet and love their children. I can see family means a lot to them.” I comment and put away the last dish.

“It means a lot to all of us, to be honest.”

Simon looks at me and there is a warm gleam in his eye.

“Hey, Myka. Wanna see what’s in my pants?” He grins impishly.

“Are you fucking serious?” I get a little hot thinking about what he is trying to do.

“Yeah, I’m serious. It’s long and hard and I used to play with it all the time in my bedroom.” He reaches into his pants and pulls out a long instrument. “It’s my piccolo. I was banished to my room anytime I wanted to play with it.”
