“Fine.”

“He pisses in the Bel Air, you’re explaining it to Tobias.”

This actually made her smile again. Or smirk, anyway. “Because after all this, that’s what he’ll be most worried about?”

I smirked back, realizing the absurdity of the situation, and something broke between us. Tiny maybe, but something. “You’re probably right.”

She followed me while I grabbed our stuff and opened the door to our room. She set the dog down on the ground where he proceeded to sniff around, then pee on the carpet. We both snickered.

“So, what are you going to name him?”

“Not sure. I was thinking maybe Lancelot,” she said, moving to grab a wad of toilet paper to soak up his mess.

This made me give her a sarcastic brow lift. “Does that make you Guinevere?”

“Only if he’s in my bed.” At that, the dog literally jumped up on her bed, and Faith laughed.

“Well, Lady Guinevere, I’ll go grab something from Denny’s next door, okay?”

She nodded, looking grateful. “Sounds good, thanks. I’ll get a shower while you’re gone.”

“Any special requests?”

“Waffles sound great, actually.” She grinned at me, reminding me of simpler times.

“With sausage? Orange juice?”

“Of course.”

“You got it.” I palmed my keys. “I’ll also go by the gas station and see if they have any puppy chow for Lance there. Keep this door locked.”

She gave a thumbs-up, and I nodded and stepped outside, taking a big gulp of the cooling air, even as I felt my freedom slipping away from me. Faith’s safety was worth it. She would always be worth it.

I took my time so she would be able to shower and settle in without me making her uncomfortable.

Oh, who was I kidding? I didn’t want to be uncomfortable. The thought of her naked in the shower was more than my libido could handle after six dry years in prison. Jesus, the thought of her curvy body, all wet and soapy... I simply didn’t trust myself to keep from crowding her in there, grabbing that ass that had been torturing my fantasies for years, and pinning her to the tile while I made her mine. Again.

“Idiot,” I muttered, rolling my shoulders as I crossed the street to the gas station. “Fucking idiot.”

I wouldn’t do that to her again.

I found puppy food, a collar, and a leash at the gas station. They didn’t have any dog bowls, but I did find Styrofoam bowls, so I bought a package, figuring they would make do for now, plus some extra waters and a package of Skittles for later. Then I hit up Denny’s for her waffles and a club sandwich for me.

I knocked and called out to let her know it was me before I let myself back inside and found her cuddled up with Lance on the furthest bed, watching the local news. She had on a white tank top and tiny purple sleep shorts that looked like satin or silk or whatever that soft shiny shit was, and I had to swallow back a deep groan.

She glanced over, her face washed clean, making her eyes look even bigger and bluer, and ran a self-conscious hand through her wet and now much shorter hair.

“Looks good,” I said, swallowing my thoughts as I set down the bags. I lifted my gaze to meet hers. “Your hair. It looks good short.”

“You don’t have to lie. I butchered it.”

I paused while pulling out our food. “I’m a lot of things, Faith, but a liar isn’t one of them.”

We studied each other for a long moment before she finally set the dog aside and stood to walk my way and sit with me at the tiny table. All the creamy white skin proceeded to unravel my brain, but I managed to unpack the bags and set her food before her.

“Been a long time since we ate a meal together,” she said, preparing her waffles, not looking up.

I didn’t answer, and I felt her eyes on me for a moment, but then we ate in silence.
