“And that’s a problem?”

“No.” She seemed uncertain.

I brushed her hair behind her ear. “Would you rather I was a prick? Paid no attention to the things you liked? Never did anything special for you?”

“Hell no!”

I chuckled. “Then what, Faith? Because you’re making no sense.”

Her palm rested over my heart and her gaze dropped to it momentarily before lifting to mine again. “You’re right,” she said, although her brows furrowed slightly.

Damn it, she was sharp. Something was off-kilter, and tomorrow she’d know why. But not tonight.

“I do appreciate all of this, Adam,” she said. “It’s just... I guess I have a hard time trusting anything that’s too perfect. Even with you.” She kissed my chest. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry.” I tugged her up until our lips met. “Just let me love you.” I kissed her again, deeper this time. “Because I do. More than anything.”

She nodded, accepting my words as she kissed me back, her fingers cradling my skull, holding me close as the movie went forgotten on the floorboard, forever paused in mid-opening credits.

I certainly hadn’t planned on making out or making love in the back seat, but I let Faith take the lead in what she needed and wanted from me as she unbuttoned my shirt and jeans, then her own, adjusting herself to ride me slow and steady, as if memorizing the feel of my flesh inside of her. She was magnificent like that, her short blond waves swinging by her face, glistening in the moonlight like a goddess, her breasts filling my palms as our hot breath fogged the windows.

Just as her orgasm chased her, her blue gaze locked on mine, full of love and total vulnerability. She was as naked and open as I’d ever seen her. “I’m yours, Adam. I’ve always been yours.”

Jesus.

The fissure in my chest cracked wide open, and my soul poured itself at her feet.

I blinked back the hot burn of tears, knowing I couldn’t take this precious gift she offered. Instead, I snapped my hips higher while gripping hers and forcing her down harder with all the force I had, gritting out, “And I’m yours, baby. Now come for me.”

And she did, quivering and crying out, her palm to the roof for support. I came on a guttural groan a moment later, and she collapsed against my chest where I held her for a long time, catching my breath and my emotions.

We cleaned up and lay there in each other’s arms for a long while, talking and laughing, watching the movie until I sensed she was sleepy. I eventually drove us back to the apartment, where I ran her a bubble bath and let her clean up while I walked Lancelot.

I met her in bed and felt her eyes on me in the dark. I rolled my head to look at her.

“Thank you for tonight,” she whispered.

“You’re welcome, love,” I whispered back.

I could sense the question in her voice. The need to ask, that she was holding back. I thanked God that she didn’t. That such a beautiful night with my girl wouldn’t be tainted by the truth. There would be enough ugliness tomorrow. Tonight—tonight was pure.

I pressed a kiss to her forehead. “I love you. Get some sleep.”

She nodded and tucked herself into my arms, drifting off moments later.

I barely slept, knowing what was to come. Still, I regretted nothing that had happened these past weeks. I’d do it all over again if it saved her.

Just after seven o’clock, my phone buzzed with a text.

Mateo:We still on?

I closed my eyes and waited the length of a breath.

Me:Yes.

Mateo:OK See you soon.

I slipped out of bed and took a shower. As I pulled on clean jeans and a t-shirt, Faith’s eyes fluttered open.
