“Why, though?” Rachel asked, hesitantly entering the conversation.

“Because,” Sawyer began before Hayden could, “they’ll be spending the snow day not doing shit. They’ll be well-rested and itching for something to happen right after it clears. They need to be given time to grow complacent once more.”

Anna nudged him with her arm, pulling his attention to her. She rolled her eyes, leaning closer to him. “As if a day matters.”

Hayden stared down at her, his cock growing hard at her soft whisper against his ear, bringing him back to the night before, all the dirty things she’d whispered into that ear. Her eyes fell to his lips, as if she knew exactly where his thoughts had gone.

He leaned into her, purposefully letting his lips brush over her ear and relishing in the shiver that followed. “In a fight like this one, every slight, even possible advantage is one we must take.” And it was the truth. It didn’t matter how small the advantage was… they needed all the help they could get.

“We could leave the fire right now,” she whispered into his ear, her teeth nipping at his lobe as he choked down the groan that nearly burst from him at that small bite. “How about you fuck me in your little supply tent? That sounds warm.”

He grunted. “Actually, it sounds hot.”

She smirked, turning away from him while leaning even closer against his arm, her small hands wrapping around it, giving a playful squeeze.

When he finally ripped his eyes from her, he caught Sawyer’s, staring straight at him with a look so blank it almost didn’t look like his brother. Sawyer wore his emotions on his sleeve; he always had. Good or bad, he had it on full display for the world. Hayden would have rathered anger than what he saw, which was just… nothing.

“Brother,” Sawyer said from across the fire, “may I have a word?”

Hayden inclined his head, rising from where he stood, preparing himself for whatever it was Sawyer had to throw at him.

“You, too, Anna.”

That… he hadn’t expected.

? ♥ ?

Anna followed closely behind Hayden as they headed toward the spot they normally slept, a hundred or so yards from the fire where everyone else remained.

If today had shown her anything, it was that Sawyer? He was a dick.

He may have done the same good things that Hayden did, but he didn’t do them kindly. He wasn’t patient, or thoughtful, or considerate of others’ feelings. He didn’t try to work with people where they were, or see things from perspectives other than his own. They may have had the same mission, but Hayden was in it for the long game, whereas Sawyer just wanted to make it to the finish line.

That might have been a stretch considering they’d only had, like, three interactions. Ever. But… screw him. Anna had never liked people in positions of authority. She certainly didn’t like those who were blind to the plight of those beneath them, a problem Sawyer seemed to have based on his interactions with Mason and his group.

Maybe she was just trying to justify her dislike of him.

Rain had told her a story about Sawyer attacking Hunter when he’d admitted he fell in love. Apparently, there was some unspoken rule that the leaders of the Resistance weren’t allowed to fall in love, to have any distraction from their mission.

But Hunter and Rain had a house and a baby, Derek and Julia couldn’t be apart for more than an hour, and Anna would fight anyone who tried to get between her and Hayden… including the grumpy Resistance leader walking beside them. The moment she saw him last night? She was ready for the fight. A part of her was shocked it took so long for Sawyer to call them out.

But now that he had? She was ready.

“This is far enough,” Hayden murmured, turning around so quickly Anna nearly crashed into him. “What do you need to say?”

“You trust these people?” Sawyer asked, his eyes on Hayden.

“As I told you last night, I do.”

Sawyer’s eyes moved to her, now. “And you? You trust them?”

He… that’s what he wanted to talk about? She furrowed her brows, not expecting him to care much about her opinion, all too used to her old superiors, even her fellow officers. Before she let the silence spread long enough to let him know how much that surprised her, she quickly nodded. “Yeah. Definitely.” They’d been nothing but accommodating to her and Hayden since they’d arrived. Well… maybe since after they’d woken up from the whole sedation mishap.

Sawyer nodded, his eyes remaining on Anna. “Hayden says this is your mission, yeah? Your plan?”

She inched closer to Hayden, lacing her fingers with his.

“It is.” They’d all spoken together the night before, so she wasn’t quite sure why he was reiterating things with them.
