Mark’s hand tightened on her shoulder uncomfortably, his friendly expression evaporating. “Especially after Eli said he saw you working with the Resistance when we attacked them three days ago.”

The blood in her veins turned to ice.

In a second, Mark was grabbing for her, but not fast enough. Before he could even get a second hand on her, her knife was pushed up into his throat, blood pumping out onto her hands even as his eyes widened in disbelief.

His fault. Not hers. He knew damn well what she was capable of.

She pulled her knife from his throat, the blood pumping more furiously as Mark fell to the ground in front of her. Her heart pounded up into her throat, but there was no time for that now.

Their stealthy infiltration just got a whole lot less stealthy.

Another officer ran toward her, but Sawyer’s fist flew out before he could get to her, knocking him to the ground with a single hit. Sawyer’s eyes met hers, and for a third time, she cursed him for coming over to talk to her. She could’ve been caught and he could’ve stayed undetected. Dammit.

He nodded toward the central building as officers began to swarm. “Get my brother.”

She nodded and turned away, ignoring him and the three officers that were on him. Her legs pushed her faster than they ever had before.

A small, nagging voice told her not to leave Sawyer alone. It was Hayden’s brother, after all, one of his closest friends… but Hayden needed her more. She couldn’t let anything else distract her.

She needed to get to Hayden. Needed to make sure he was safe. Everything else could be dealt with after, but he needed to be safe. Alive.

Because if he wasn’t?

Anna would tear this entire fucking world apart.

Chapter Thirteen

ANNA SOMEHOW MANAGED TO make her way into the compound’s main building. Six guards had to be taken out in the process, sure, but that wasn’t a fairly low number, all things considered.

Being that the original one had gone to shit, she needed a plan.

Where would they most likely be keeping Hayden, assuming he was brought back here? He could be in a holding cell, which, if this compound was anything like the one she’d worked in, would be on the first floor. But he could also have been brought to Greene’s chambers, which would be on the top floor.

Fuck. How many floors were there in this building? Her compound had three, but… dammit.

An officer moved behind her, and she spun around, pressing her knife into his chest just as he moved to grab her. Anna did not like killing, did not like death. Sometimes, though, death was necessary.

These are bad men, she reminded herself. Not that she particularly needed the reminder. Anna was pretty sure that even if Hayden had been taken by good men, she’d still be just as ready to kill to get him back.

Of all the blood she had on her hands, this new batch bothered her the least.

Trying to come up with a plan was pointless. She just needed to check each room until she found him. That was the quickest way, unfortunately.

With that in mind, Anna began moving to each door, pulling them open and looking for Hayden. Looking for the man she… loved.

Because she did love him. Dammit, she did.

Most of the rooms were empty. Some held prisoners, who she quickly released, hoping they’d fight on the side of the Resistance. They either did that or ran, because none of them made a move to harm her after she told them to get out of their cells.

Before long, she’d made it to the second floor, which was far more flooded than the first had been. She pulled out the gun in her waistband, holding it up and training her weapon.

Anna may not have been as experienced with a weapon as Hayden or the others, but she’d practiced enough to have damn good aim. She did not waste a single bullet as she made her way through the officers. By the time the hallway was empty, she was halfway through her ammo.

Gunshots echoed outside, chaos all around them. Good. It meant Hayden would hear and know that they were coming for him. He’d know to hang in there. He’d know she hadn’t abandoned him.

Nothing mattered except getting to Hayden.

Anna moved over bodies as she searched each room for him, but to her dismay, the rooms on this floor mostly seemed to be offices and supply rooms. She huffed out a breath of frustration, climbing the stairs to the next floor, hoping that it was the last one.
