Slowly, her breathing steadied. She pulled back, catching his satisfied stare. A thin layer of sweat coated his skin, a few pieces of his too-long hair sticking to his forehead. A drop of blood gleamed in one of his stitches, but it was still intact, nothing torn out.

Her own stitches pulled at the skin on her shoulder, but she ignored it, pushing her own grown-out hair from her face.

She couldn’t hold back the smile on her face. “We’re a hot mess.”

He grinned right back at her. “There’s nobody else I’d rather be messy with.” And then he was kissing her again, her core squeezing around his already thickening cock.

She could get used to this.

? ♥ ?

Hayden held tight to Anna’s waist as they walked toward the Resistance Headquarters. They’d stayed a day or two behind his brother and the others, wanting a bit of privacy on their journey.

And they’d enjoyed every single second of it. Thoroughly.

Now, though, it was back to business. A lingering thread of worry swam in Hayden’s stomach, whispering that Anna may want to leave again, may not want to stay here with him.

But she wouldn’t have come all this way, wouldn’t have stuck by his side through everything, wouldn’t have said that she loved him. Love. Hayden never imagined it for himself, but… now he wasn’t quite sure how he’d gone so long without it.

“Ready?” she asked.

He bit back a sigh and nodded, pushing open the gate to the main compound that his people now called home.

His eyes surveyed the chaos around him, people running in every direction, most of them holding weapons a bit too high in the air, as if they weren’t quite sure what to make of them. That was… more than odd.

“Anna!”

In a second’s time, Julia was running toward them, arms outstretched as she quickly pulled Anna from Hayden’s arms and into her own. He grunted, but on the inside, he smiled.

Anna froze for a moment before patting her friend on the back.

Julia pulled back, and then her arms wrapped around Hayden, shocking him to his core. He stood there, frozen, completely taken back. He’d… never had someone hug him like that before? His brothers, sure, and Anna, of course, but both of those situations were different, and—

“Derek and I were so worried about you guys! We all were. I really missed you.” A blush spread across her cheeks as she took another step back. “Sorry, I just got a little excited. When we saw the others without you, I thought the worst… they said you’d be here in a few days but I just had to see it myself, and—”

Hayden placed a hand on Julia’s shoulder, giving in a squeeze. “We missed you, too.”

She smiled wide and then pulled both him and Anna into a hug. They both went rigid. Perhaps, neither one of them would ever get used to letting their guard down around others. Maybe it would always be abnormal when others showed them affection.

All that mattered was that with each other, those walls no longer existed.

Around everyone else? She could be the hot, fiery former officer who nobody dared to mess with. And he could be the withdrawn, all-knowing Resistance leader that most shied away from.

He knew just how soft she could be, and she knew just how hot he could be.

It felt better that way, knowing it was their little secret to share.

Another wave of tightness squeezed in his gut, a creeping thought entering his mind. What comes next?

Hayden leaned down to Anna as she talked with her friend, pressing a kiss to her forehead before pulling back. “I need to speak with my brothers. I’ll find you in an hour?”

Anna’s lips spread into a wide smile. “Sure.”

“We can meet you at the barbecue,” Julia offered. “Derek’s grilling a big buck that Sven got earlier.”

“I am pretty hungry.” Anna gave him a wink, heating him to his core.

He nodded. “I’ll see you both there.”
