Her face falls and as she tightly clenches her fists, I see a sudden change in her demeanor.

“You know what your problem is?”She says, glaring at me with fire in her eyes.“You treat me like you hate me, but deep down, I know the truth, Ezra Cole. You don’t think you deserve me. That’s why you keep pushing me away. You’re on this mission to save my soul.”

I put on a sarcastic smirk as I look her up and down. “Don’t flatter yourself, Angel. I don’t give a shit about what happens to your soul.”

“Angel.”She scoffs, shaking her head at me.“How fitting, considering you see yourself as a demon. You doomed us from the start. You put me on this impossible fucking pedestal and every time you see a hint of my darkness seep out, you think you’re the one who put it there. Newsflash handsome, you aren’t the only one with a past and as much as you don’t want to acknowledge it, I was fucked up long before you came into the picture.”

It doesn’t matter. None of this does. She isn’t real. This thing in front of me is just a phantom, a reflection of my fucking guilt coming to haunt me.

“Leave.” I say flatly, gesturing towards the door. “You’ve said your peace. Now I have work to do.”

She cocks her jaw slightly and narrows her eyes at me.“Oh, you do?”She presses, eyeing me up and down.“Last time I checked, work didn’t include mutilating dead people.”

My eyes flick over to the man hanging in the center of my basement, and the second I spot his motionless carotid artery, I curse.

Fuck. How did I miss that?

The man is dead alright and based on the amount of blood below his body; he has been for some time.

If I had a conscience, I’d feel bad for him. Then again, the bastard got exactly what was coming to him. Pro-tip if you’re going to steal from a subset of The Russian Mafia, make sure you don’t rip your facemask off until you’re far out of sight of our cameras. The dumb fuck made it almost too easy for Tristan to find him. He took pictures of the drugs he stole and posted it all over social media.

The minute he chose to advertise his little come-up, he signed up for a one on one with me. No one touches what’s ours and gets away with it.No one.

“So,”Stevie taunts, standing beside me to lean her head on my shoulder,“did hurting him make you feel better?”

I don’t dignify her question with a response. She and I both know the answer.

“I didn’t think so. When are you going to wake up and realize that you’ll never escape me? I’ll haunt your every waking moment until you make this right. We belong together. You’re the only one who hasn’t accepted it yet.”

I’ve had enough. Of the taunting. Of the fucking delusions. I need to end this little warped fantasy once and for all.

“Do you know what happens to girls who fall for monsters?” I hiss, grabbing her by her jaw and shoving her hard against the wall. “I’m not talking about the fairy tale bullshit. I’m talking about real life. Do you know what happens to them?”

She shakes her head.

“They break.” I snap, gripping her jaw so tightly I’m afraid it’ll bruise. “Because no matter how much you try to change them, no matter how much you think you love me. A monster is still a monster. They can’t love you back. All they’ll ever do, all they can ever do, is destroy you.”

Stevie tries to jerk out of my hold, but I just push her down harder. I raise my knife to her throat and as I press the sharp blade against her skin; I see a flicker of fear in her eyes.

That’s more like it.I think, grinning down at her.Remember who I am at my core, Angel. I’m not some broken boy you can fix. I’m a cold-blooded killer.

“You want to hurt me?”She croaks, and I feel her chin tremble in my hand.“You want to scar me like your past scarred you?”Stevie shifts forward and before I can stop it, my knife sinks into her throat.“I’d let you.”She continues, moving closer and not even flinching when she forces the blade in deeper.“I’d whisper sweet nothings in your ear while you sink your knife into me over and over again.”

She flicks her tongue against my earlobe and I visibly swallow, doing what I can to keep it together. This isn’t fucking real.

“Something tells me you know that. That’s why you’ve done everything in your power to push me away. But there’s no denying our love. You hurt because you love me. You’re just too fucking stubborn to admit it.”

I jerk my knife away and shove her off of me, sending her crashing to the ground. I may be addicted to her, but what we have isn’t love. Love is impossible for someone like me.

“I don’t love.” I say, shaking my head as I glare at the blood all over my hands. “It isn’t in my fucking DNA.”

“Is that so?”She asks, smirking at me as she pulls herself up from the floor.“Then you should probably ask yourself, why is it that after all the deaths you’ve caused, and all the people you’ve hurt, I’m the only ghost that haunts you?”
