“Do you guys have a minute?” I ask, forcing myself to get straight to the point. “There’s something I need to tell you.”

“What’s wrong?” Atlas asks, furrowing his brow as he moves from behind his desk and walks up to me. “Is something going on? Are you in some kind of trouble?”

“No.” I say, shaking my head. “No, it’s nothing like that.”

I’m stalling. I know I’m only delaying the inevitable, but a selfish part of me wants to prolong this. After I tell them how wrong I was about Dimitri, there’s a good chance they’ll throw it in my face and I’ll never get to be this close to them again.

“What is it?” Tristan asks, stepping forward as he searches my eyes. “Whatever it is, we can f… figure it out. You’re home. That’s all that m… matters.”

I take in a sharp inhale and worry my lip. I have to stop dragging this on. “I’m not staying.” I force out, looking away to hang on to the little composure I have left.

“What are you talking about?” Atlas asks as a look of genuine confusion crosses his face. “Of course you’re staying.”

“I’m—” I stammer, trying to remember the words I practiced in the drive over. I thought I could do this, but it’s so much harder than I ever imagined it would be. The thought of telling them the truth makes me physically sick. I don’t want to lose them again.

Despite the fact that they didn’t come for me.

Despite the fact that they were here with someone else.

Heat spreads up my neck as their eyes bore into me and all I want to do is bury myself in the ground.

Say something you coward.

Own up to what you did.

Atlas searches my eyes as he watches a kaleidoscope of emotions flicker across my face. “Kitten.” He says, placing a calming hand on my shoulder. “What the hell is going on?”
