Where is she?

Where the fuck is she?

I pick up the sound of a stream of bitter curses and shove the second floor door open to find Melanie sitting against the door. As soon as she realizes it’s me, she lowers her gun and tries to get to her feet. “Stupid asshole caught me in the leg as he was hitting the ground.” She offers with a shake of her head.

“Come on,” I say, throwing one of her arms over my shoulder. “Let’s get you the hell out of here.”

After we get to the rendezvous point and we tend to her wound, I know I can’t stay. Alex is still in there and I know she thinks she can take care of herself, but Mel can handle a gun with the best of them and she still got hurt. I have to go back for her. I can’t leave her in there without me.

I make it inside the building again, just as easily as I slipped out, but the second I step into the first floor hallway, I hear the distinct sound of a gun being cocked and freeze on instinct.

“Hello, Kroshka,” Dimitri says, pressing the hot tip of his revolver against the back of my head. “Welcome back from the dead.”

* * *

“So you’ve been the missing link all along?” Dimitri scoffs bitterly as he shakes his head. “I wondered how this all came to be, but I should’ve known. You’ve been dying to fuck me any way you could.”

“I hate to be the bearer of bad news,” I say, trying to distract him as I slip a knife from my hip, “but you’re kind of fucked either way. Did you see all the people that have come for you? Do you honestly think you’re going to walk out of this place alive?”

“I will.” He says, hissing the words in my ear. “No one’s going to touch me as long as I have you as my hostage.”

All hope seems lost, when out of nowhere, The Reapers bust through the doorway and my heart leaps out of my chest at the sight of them. A light shines behind them, illuminating their silhouettes in an eerie glow. They look like warriors. Bloodied, bruised, and innately savage. Their wild eyes scan the dark hallway and when they finally settle on me, I see a little slice of humanity return to their eyes.

“Stevie.”

“Drop your fucking weapon.” Dimitri hisses as he digs the icy steel barrel of his gun against the back of my neck. “Unless, of course, you wan’t me to blow her fucking head off.”

This is torture. I can see the anguish on their faces and the indecision in their eyes. I know exactly what they’re going to do. They’re going to try to save me and end up getting themselves killed. And the worst part is, I’m powerless to do anything to stop them. Even with this knife in my hand, I could try to attack Dimitri, but his gun will go off before I even get the chance.

Fuck. I’m so sick of feeling like everything just happens to me. That I have no control over my destiny and I’m constantly just reacting to what happens to me. For once in my life, I’m going to take charge. For once in my life, I will not be afraid.

I grip the steel knife in my hand and jab it into my throat, wincing from the pain as I draw a long cut across my neck.

Either way, Dimitri was going to kill me. At least this way, The Reapers won’t get caught in any crossfire. And in that last moment, just before everything turns dark, I smile at them, knowing that at least I was finally able to conquer my fears and put a stop to that fucking monster.
