CHAPTERTWENTY-TWO

A gut-wrenching scream cuts through the chaos, echoing off the walls and filling the entire room. The sound is so primal. So fucking guttural that I can almost feel the pain as if it were my own.

It’s Ezra.

He’s fallen to his knees and when he snaps his head up, the emotion of his face is so raw, it almost hurts to look at it.

What the fuck just happened?

I shift my gaze from Dimitri to Stevie and see the metallic gleam of a knife as it slips from her hands. She stares at the four serenely before her eyes roll into the back of her head and a stream of deep crimson blood seeps down her neck. The image is so shocking that for a moment, I can’t comprehend what’s happening. I just stand there frozen in place. I can’t move. I can’t think. All I can do is stare in horror as the color slowly drains from her face.

Stevie’s legs give out from underneath her and when I see her body fold unnaturally into itself, I finally snap out of it.

“Cyrus!” Atlas snaps, yelling for me as he and Tristan race to her side. “Call a fucking ambulance.”

I’m on it in no time. Dialing the numbers and barking out the address to the dispatcher. Chaos is still erupting around us, but with The Mercenaries containing Dimitri, and the other crews holding off his goons, we can keep all of our focus to her.

“S… she’s going to be okay, right?” Tristan asks, his eyes flicking from her pale face to the pool of blood filling around her body.

Atlas finishes wrapping his shirt around her throat and grimaces. “I don’t know.” He sighs, shaking his head. “She’s lost a lot of blood. God, where the fuck is the ambulance?”

“Why would she do that?” I ask, staring at her lifeless body. “We could’ve stopped him.” I choke out. “We could’ve fucking saved her.”

“She did it because she didn’t have a choice.” Alex says numbly as she moves to kneel next to her sister. “Dimitri was going to kill her either way. I know my sister. She did this to protect us.”

She’s right. That sounds exactly like something she would do. Sacrificing herself for everyone else and not thinking for one fucking second about how any of us would deal with the aftermath.

Noticing his absence, I leave Alex, Tristan and Atlas, to tend to her wound and search the room for Ezra. I search among the bodies and find him exactly as I left him; staring at Stevie’s lifeless body with a look of pure anguish on his face.

Seeing her like this is going to push him over the edge.

Ezra looks up at me before slowly dragging his eyes towards Dimitri, who is now cowering in the corner of the room. Ezra cocks his head and as he glares at him, his eyes take on an almost feral look.

Fuck.

Ezra jumps to his feet and breaks out into a full-blown sprint, crossing the distance between the two of them in a matter of seconds. Dimitri notices his approach a second too late and his eyes widen in horror as he fumbles for his gun, but he’s too fucking slow. Ezra is already on him, throwing him to the ground and kicking his gun clear across the room.

Ezra's fists start flying and with the amount of fury he has coursing through his veins, I already know Dimitri doesn’t stand a fucking chance.

Ez beats the shit out of him, even as heavy sobs rake through his trembling body. “You fucking killed her!” He screams, pummeling his fists into Dimitri’s face over and over again. “You motherfucker!” He shouts, screaming the words at the top of his lungs. “You fucking killed her.”

He keeps screaming at him and there’s so much raw emotion in his voice that everyone in the room slowly takes notice.

I’ve never seen Ezra cry before.

None of us have.

Ezra keeps hitting him, even as the chaos in the room dies down. Even as the medics come to rush her away. Even as the room fills with nothing but the sound of his sobs and the thud of his fits crunching against wet flesh.

He just keeps hitting him.
