“What do you mean?”

“I mean, you could go out with anyone you wanted. Why do you want to go out withme?” Her voice was trembling, barely a whisper.

For the thousandth time, I wondered what had torn her self-esteem to shreds and made her so afraid of the world. She was one of the most amazing people I’d ever met, and I was going to make it my mission in life to make sure she saw what I saw.

“Because you’re smart and funny and kind and gorgeous and when you smile, it takes my breath away,” I told her. “And because I’ve never felt more like myself than I do when I’m with you.”

“I meant what I said before. I need to take it slow,” she sighed. “Like, reallyslow.”

I tilted her chin up and kissed her again, letting my lips linger on hers for a few extra seconds. I knew it was going to take time to get her to trust me, but I just hoped that even if her mind was still sending her warning signals, her heart could see that I’d never hurt her or try to force her into anything she wasn’t ready for.

“That’s okay. We’ll go as slow as you want. I’m not in a hurry. But will you be my girlfriend? I’ll beg if I have to.”

She gave me another timid smile. “Yeah, I will.”
