Kyler could be pissed at me all she wanted. Just as long as she was safe. That was all I cared about.

“I didn’t see Maya’s van. I think we’re alone. Seriously, man, what’s going on?” he pressed.

“Ky came with us,” I explained, leaning against the wall and sinking down onto the tile floor. “And the fuckers cornered me the second I walked inside. They were actually fucking taunting me about raping her, B. They know I know about it. And they just threatened her.”

“We’ll get ‘em, Ian,” he promised as he sat down next to me. “One way or the other, they’ll pay for what they did to her.”

“It was only two of them. What if Drew got to Ky before they left?” I said, finally voicing my fears out loud.

“Text her. See if she’s okay.”

Right. Texting. I could do that. I pulled my phone out of my pocket.

Me: I know this is going to seem weird and borderline possessive psycho, but please tell me you’re okay. Stuff went down. I’ll tell you when we’re alone, but right now, I just need to know you’re safe.

Her response was immediate.

Kyler: I’m safe. We just got to Pizza Ranch. Are YOU okay?

I let out a huge sigh of relief.

Me: Physically, yes. But promise me you’ll stick close to my family all night. Even if you have to go to the bathroom during the game, take one of the girls with you. I have no idea how many of Max’s cronies are going to be here tonight.

Kyler: I will. Be safe. Please.

Me: I’ll do my best. I love you.

Kyler: I love you too. Here’s something that might make you feel better.

Kyler: *selfie of her with Izzie and Hillary*

Despite the adrenaline and fear that was still coursing through my veins, I smiled. Kyler looked so happy in that picture. Comfortable. Like she just belonged with my family.

Because she did.

And that reminded me. I quickly sent her the pictures that Hillary had taken of us when they dropped me off here.

“She okay?” Braden asked, reminding me that we were still sitting here outside the locker room.

I nodded. “Having lunch with my family.”

“Good,” he sighed, sounding relieved.

“I can’t…I…what are we going to do, B? They’re getting desperate. And desperate equals dangerous,” I croaked.

“I’ve actually been thinking about that. This is one instance where me still having my man card might prove useful.”

I looked at him, raising an eyebrow.

“You know how many girls I’ve gone out with. But I’ve struck out with just as many. A bunch of girls – like, abunch– seemed scared of me when I asked them out. Like seriously scared. What if Ky’s not the only one? What if there are more girls just like her at Settlers?”

“If there are, do you really think they’ll admit it tous? We’re guys. Guys who play football with the people who might have hurt them,” I pointed out.

“You’re dating someone who could get them to talk.”

“You know how many people know about Ky’s past, B? Three. You, me, and Melissa. She’s not about to come forwardorask anyone else to.”

“Okay, then we’ll figure something else out. But not right now. Come on. I’m taking you to walk it off for a few minutes, and then we’re going to go in that locker room and act like we don’t know those three motherfuckers should be behind bars. We’ve got a trophy to win,” he said, standing up and holding his hand out to me.

I sighed and let him help me up. He was right. There was nothing I could do about this right now. I had to get my head in the game. We could figure out how to make those bastards pay later.
