I sigh with relief. Is that all? He was worried about telling me this? “Well, he’s entitled to do that... it’ll be a shame to lose the cafe on the block, but someone else will buy—”

“Not gonna happen.” He cuts me short. “The entire block of shops you are sitting on is selling up.”

My blood runs hot and then cold. This can’t be true. What does this mean for my shop? I can’t lose it.I won’t.“All of them?” I whisper.

“Every one.”

“But why?”

“They’ve been made an offer they can’t refuse. Well above the value of the business. I just spoke to a few of them to check out the story. They were all asking about you. If you’ve taken the offer yet?”

“I haven’t had an offer. I’d have told you.” My heart thuds hard.

“That’s what I said.” Parker nods.

“Who’s behind this? Who’s the buyer? Did they tell you?” My blood is now pounding in my head. Roaring and whooshing. Instinctively, I can sense what he’s going to say. I know who it is—it’s him—Neal.

“They aren’t supposed to talk about it until it’s all signed and sealed, but Luigi told me some investment mogul has bought them out—MJ Inc—whoever that is.”

MJ Inc? His numberplate taunts me.Bastard!I drop my head in my hands. Tonight, he’s going to ask me to sell up. That’s why he wouldn’t tell me what he did. That’s what he wants to discuss with me tonight.

Parker puts the coffee in my hands and guides it to my lips. “Sip it slowly. I know it’s a shock, but I did try to warn you.”

Boy, he’s not wrong there. I’m experiencing double the shock. And triple the anger. I don’t know how I’m even containing it.

I can’t believe Neal would stoop so low, or be so underhand as to lead me on.

I liked him—actually, it was a bit more than justlike.

But what he’s doing has killed that stone dead.

A pulse throbs heavily between my eyes. Disappointment floods my stomach, and my chest tightens.

He isn’t interested in me, he’s only interested in my shop.

It hurts that his sweet gesture, the cute bouquet affair, was just a ruse to get my guard down. I’d certainly fallen for it. The past week, I’d been thinking of him every time I looked at that bouquet he left for me. But I guess that was his plan.

Damn him to hell!
