“Oh really?”

“Turns out, me being an idiot wasn’t a deal breaker as long as I don’t do it again,” he said.

“Or just practice your groveling.” Cate said.

Charlie tugged Cate’s sleeve toward the pony rides so hard she almost tripped over her feet. She relented, and the two got in line at the corral.

The music from the stage started up again.

Kylie slipped her arm around Derek’s elbow. “Sounds like the bluegrass band. I would really like to see Forrest play.”

“Lead the way.” He bowed sweeping his free arm toward the bandstand.

They maneuvered through the crowds and got to the back of the grassy area covered in picnic blankets and lawn chairs. Lots of folks had settled in to watch the band. Kylie could make out a row of lawn chairs at the front occupied by Edna and her friends.

Derek stood behind Kylie and slipped his arms around her waist as the band started playing a slow folksy song. Forrest plucked gently at his banjo while he sang about love under the summer sun. It was hard to tell from that distance, but Kylie could’ve sworn he sang the entire song gazing at Edna.

“Care to dance?” Derek whispered into Kylie’s ear.

“I’d love to.”

He took her hands and spun her around to face him. As they swayed back and forth, a warm spring breeze came off the lake. The sun shining on them made a soft glow around Derek’s hair and his brown eyes sparkled.

“This is much better than my humming.” He pressed his forehead against hers.

“I’m never leaving you again,” she said.

“I know. I love you.”

“I love you too.”

He drew her closer until their lips met, the crowd around them melting away.

Kylie was both weak in the knees and the strongest she’d ever been in the same moment. She was finally on the right path. She may have taken the long way around, but Camden was where she belonged.
