Chapter 19

Sophia

I was curled up in the large, king-sized bed desperately attempting to sleep but was too worried and anxious over Zack to be able to turn my mind off. So, I laid there, idling flipping through videos on Tiktok while hoping he didn’t ditch me.

It was past 3 am before there was a little beep of the door to the room being unlocked and Zack stumbled through the doorway. Sitting up in bed, I waited for Zack to make his way into the bedroom, turning on the light next to the bed for him as he crossed the threshold.

By the way that he was stumbling, it was evident that he’d been drinking. “Where have you been?”

“I was hanging with your brother. We had a bottle of wine…” he walked halfway into the room and then paused, “Actually it was two bottles of wine. He paid a grand a bottle. It was insane.”

Damn you Isaac, I cursed my brother under my breath. “Yeah, that sounds like my brother.”

He clumsily removed his clothing as he made his way to the bed. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to laugh or be angry with him. We had so many things to discuss and I’d been in the room stressing over him, and all the while he was hanging out with Isaac getting loaded.

“Where’s my brother now?” I asked sitting up fully in the bed, clutching the blanket to my naked chest.

“I think he took the waitress up to his room.” He was naked by the time he reached the bed. I tried to keep my eyes on his face, this wasn’t the time to get hot and horny for him. We had a lot to discuss.

“What did you talk about?”

“Your family. It was strange hearing about your family from someone other than you.”

I winced, while I doubted that comment was meant to hurt it felt like a slap in the face. Although, I guess I deserved that. “I’m sorry. I-”

Sliding under the covers with me, he reached over and placed his index finger over my lips. “Don’t need to apologize, I understand why you didn’t tell me the truth or at least kept things from me. If the roles were reversed, I don’t think I’d have told you either.”

A wave of relief washed through me so intense that it brought tears to my eyes. “Then we’re good?” I held my breath waiting for him to respond.

Laying onto his back, he pulled me to him holding my body tight to his.

Sliding my hand across his chest, I held tight to him, savoring the feel of his warm, hard body next to mine. I’d been so scared when he’d left that he’d never come back, just having him next to me now felt like heaven. I didn’t ever want to let him go.

“Yes, we’re okay. I’d like for you to feel like you can trust me enough to tell me things – anything that is on your mind. Honesty is a big part of a relationship and especially when there are circumstances like we have, it’s imperative that the conversation between us is open and honest.”

“I agree. I’ll never keep anything from you again.” Placing my chin on his chest, I looked down into his eyes. Despite that that that he’d stumbled into the room, he didn’t look nearly as intoxicated as I’d originally guessed.

He ran this hand through my hair, his fingers tugging lightly on the strands making me close my eyes and relish the feel of the soft pull. “So, what do we do now?”

“Well, your brother has invited us to Helka Island.”

My eyes sprung back open and I looked down at him. “Helka Island. You really want to go?”

“He invited us down during the winter break.”

“And you want to go?”

“I think it would be a good idea to go and I can see what it’s all about. He claims it’s as close to a utopia as I’ll ever see and I honestly think I’d like to be the judge of that myself.”

“Wow, yes, if you’d like.”

“Also, it would be nice to go somewhere where we aren’t hiding from everything and everyone. We can be a couple, kiss in public, make love on the beach.”

Laughing, I rolled my eyes at him. “You want to make love on the beach?”

“Sure. Your brother did an excellent job of selling it to me. You only live once, right?”

“That is true.”
