“Chief Blake,” he said, holding out his hand to Luna.

“Luna McKinley.”

“You and Dean all done discussing his wedded bliss?”

Dean wasn’t embarrassed. In fact, his smile got wider. He then pulled out his phone.

“Any chance of a selfie, Luna?”

“Sure.”

Chief Blake said something unflattering, but Luna stepped in, and the picture was taken.

“Nash, excellent timing. You come on through too.”

Luna turned to see the man who had heated her up quicker than a sauna wander in. Jeans, T-shirt, and a cap with SRR on it. He was dressed like any number of men in Ryker Falls today.

“What does SRR mean?” she asked casually. No need to make this awkward, even if inside it was that and more. She could do this.

“Sleepy River Ranch.” His words were curt and clipped.

“Are you back to being grumpy again?”

“I hadn’t realized he’d moved on yet. Nice,” Chief Blake said. “You both come on through now.”

She was aware of Nash as they walked through the building, passing desks with trays and computers and the usual stuff you found in an office.

“Take a seat.” Chief Blake waved them into the chairs in front of his desk once they reached his office. “I’ll get Dean to bring coffee if he can wipe the stars out of his eyes.”

“How’s the head?” Nash said when he’d left.

“Better, thanks.”

“Should you be out of bed?”

“I feel better for a walk.”

“Tell me you didn’t walk into town?”

She looked at him then; he was frowning. “Mr. Goldhirsh walked with me, and I’m not an idiot. I know my limits.”

“You were knocked unconscious four days ago,” he gritted out.

“I know that,” she said before he could say anything else. “And thanks for arriving when you did and helping me that night. I don’t know how long I would have been there if you hadn’t come.”

“You’d have woken up at some stage.”

“Thanks anyway.”

“Sure. Any idea who it could have been?”

“I didn’t see anything. They came at me from behind.” Luna was looking at the desk before her, so she saw his hand clenched into a fist on his thighs out the corner of her eye.

“Luna, about what happened in that alley before you were attacked—”

“I would rather just move on. Let’s put it down to temporary madness.”

He was silent, so she looked at him, saw his eyes were dark with some emotion she couldn’t read.
