Chance sat down and took off his backpack.

The band performing was good Derek discovered when he finally settled down on the blanket. He pulled some toys out of the diaper bag and put them in the playpen for Jaden to play with.

“Everyone just loved the pictures and wants to meet Jaden,” Chance said. He pulled some forms out of the backpack and handed them to Derek.

Derek looked them over carefully. Matthew had trained him well.

“Do you have a PayPal account?”

“Doesn’t everyone?” Derek asked. “Why?”

“That’s where we’ll send your payment.”

He really didn’t need the money. “Is your office around here?”

Chance nodded and pointed to the left. “My apartment is too.” He pointed to the right of the park.

Derek knew this area well. It was a great neighborhood for young adults. It had clubs, bars, and lots of shopping. He signed the paperwork and handed it back to Chance. “Are you ready to eat?”

Chance nodded. “I skipped lunch so I have room.”

Derek began unpacking the basket. Besides fried chicken, potato salad, cheese and crackers, Edna had packed food for Jaden and dessert. The basket also contained napkins, paper plates, and plastic utensils. There was also a bottle of wine. Derek dug around and found some plastic wine glasses, too. “She thinks of everything.” He fixed two plates and handed one to Chance.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” Derek took Jaden out and fed him first while Chance ate.

“He has a very good appetite,” Chance said.

Edna had sent Jaden some rice cereal.

Chance took Jaden later so Derek could eat. “Do you like music, Jaden?”

Jaden answered Chance with his best baby-talk.

“He’s a future public speaker,” Chance said.

Derek laughed. Chance had a great sense of humor.

Edna had packed Danish for their dessert. Jaden got a teething biscuit. After lunch, Derek cleaned Jaden up and changed his diaper.

“You’re quite good at that.”

“The trick is to do it when he’s not looking,” Derek explained. “You have to take cover when his little pea-shooter rises.”

Chance laughed. “You know this from experience?”

Derek nodded. “This kid has good aim.” He laid Jaden down for a nap since his nephew had been yawning since they arrived. It gave him and Chance time to be alone. Derek hated when the concert ended because he was really enjoying himself. “Can I see your place?”

“Why?” Chance asked. “It’s just an apartment.”

“Do you have some cute guy waiting there for you?” Derek picked Jaden out of the playpen. Chance folded it and picked up the picnic basket. This time Derek carried Jaden and the diaper bag, while Chance struggled with the rest.

“No. It’s not very exciting.”

“Let me be the judge of that,” Derek said as they walked to his car. Chance put everything into the trunk while Derek put Jaden in the car seat. Chance got into the passenger seat and buckled up, while Derek slid in behind the wheel. Chance gave him directions. Derek found a parking spot and the three of them got out in front of an apartment building. Chance carried Jaden who was still asleep.

His apartment was on the second floor. “Excuse the mess,” he said when they entered.
