Chapter Four

Chance didn’t expect a guy with a deep voice to answer Derek’s cell phone the next day. He identified himself as Matthew Brown, Derek’s lawyer and said that Derek was busy with a client.

“My name is Chance Richards and I’m trying to get together with him so he can go over some photos and articles that I did on him for our magazine. I have a rapidly approaching deadline so it’s urgent that we meet.”

“Mr. Webster is a very busy man,” Matthew said.

“I’m very aware of that. It will only take a couple of minutes.”

“I’ll have Mr. Webster return your call as soon as he’s available.” He hung up.

Chance stared at his phone, not understanding why some lawyer would be answering Derek’s personal cell phone. Either the two of them were very close or this Matthew Brown was nosy.

Derek never returned his call. Chance decided to go out and hang with his friends again.

“Did you ever hook up with that guy you were dancing with the other night?” Nash asked Chance.

“No.” Actually he threw Adan’s card away after calling him and telling him that he was in love with someone else.

“He and his friends were hilarious. I think you’re missing out on a good thing, messing around with baby pictures all day.”

“I bet he found time to go visit that Webster fellow,” Adam said.

“That’s a bet you would lose,” Chance said. “He’s busier than I am, and he’s always tied up in some meeting.”

Nash chuckled. “Maybe’s he’s avoiding you. Go for the sure thing.”

He had stayed out with his friends much later than he expected and Chance had missed Derek’s text message. Chance texted Derek the next day, apologizing for not responding. Derek invited him over for dinner at the mansion. Derek sent his car for him.

“Mr. Webster didn’t have to go to so much trouble,” Chance said to the cute blond driver with an icy blue stare.

“It’s no trouble at all,” Mitch, the driver said. “It’s my job.”

“Have you been working for Mr. Webster a long time?”

“Since high school,” Mitch answered. “My grandfather owns a limousine service. Mr. Webster’s father hired me.”

“Was young Mr. Webster in high school when you met?”

“Yes,” Mitch answered.

“What was he like?”

“He was very popular,” Mitch answered. “And a regular class clown.”

“So, the two of you went to the same school?”

“Yes.

“That doesn’t sound like the Derek I know.”

“He was on the student council for four years and always came up with some zany things for us to do for the school fair. One year he made us dress up like guys from the seventies. We had old time music, wore bell bottom pants, and we had long hair. It was a blast.”

Chance chuckled. “Did he ever get in trouble?”

“No,” Mitch answered. “Everyone liked him. The teachers, too. Mr. Webster was smart and always made the honor roll. He used to help me with math. That’s how we met. He taught me about women, too.”

“Oh, really. Did he date a lot of girls?”
