“I’ll come over and rock you to sleep, too.”

Derek actually smiled. “I’ll remember that.”

“How was your day?”

“Only two meetings,” Derek answered. “Then Matthew and I had lunch and I signed some papers while he watched.”

“Matthew?”

“My attorney. You spoke to him on my phone.”

“Oh, the deep-voiced guy with the attitude.”

Derek chuckled. “That’s him.”

“Why was he answering your personal phone?”

“Because I asked him to,” Derek said. “I was in a meeting and waiting on Jaden’s doctor to call about his next office visit. I didn’t want to miss it.”

“They could have left you a message,” Chance said.

“I supposed so, but Matthew likes to be helpful. You saw him at the restaurant that day.”

“Oh, so that’s him. He has mean eyes.”

“They’re not always that way. He can be sweet at times.”

Chance stopped eating. “How do you know that?”

Derek didn’t stop eating.

“Let me guess. He was your first?”

He nodded. “We’re just good friends now. He’s dating this wonderful guy named Chaz, who’s his legal assistant.”

“You’re friends with your ex’s current beau?”

Derek nodded.

“Why?”

“Because he’s a fun guy, and Matthew acts like an idiot around him. Chaz has Matthew wrapped around his finger, so to speak.”

“So, Chaz and Matthew live together?”

“Yes. Chaz wants to get married and have a family. Poor thing.”

“Why do you mean by that?”

“Because Matthew has no paternal skills, and he doesn’t want any children. He only tolerates Jaden because Jaden is his godchild.”

“Is that the reason the two of you broke up?”

Derek shook his head. “No, it happened about five years ago. He didn’t understand why I had to give up my life to raise my sister. He didn’t want a ready-made family. Then Chaz came along and the rest is history.”

“Did he cheat on you with Chaz?”

“Yes,” Derek said. “But I’ve forgiven them.”
