“In my heart I thought I’d be unforgettable. That’s what I assumed since you haven’t dated anyone else since our breakup. Now this fellow has just waltzed right in and destroyed my dream.”

“What dream?”

“Of maybe the two of us getting back together again.”

Derek swallowed before he choked. “What about Chaz?”

“Oh, he’d still be in the picture,” Matthew said.

Derek chuckled sarcastically. “You mean you want to keep both of us?”

Matthew nodded. “I can handle both of you. I mean, you can share me.”

If they weren’t surrounded by a lot of people Derek would laugh. “Really? Do you even remember why we broke up?”

Matthew nodded again. “Because you didn’t have time for me. You were too busy taking care of your sister.”

“And now I’m taking care of my sister’s child. So, what’s changed?”

“You’ve changed,” Matthew answered. “You’re not a teenager anymore. You’re a gorgeous grown man.”

Derek couldn’t believe the length Matthew would go through to keep him away from other guys. “Thank, but no thanks. I like Chaz but not in that way.”

“What’s so good about this guy?” Matthew asked. “What can he do for you?”

“He’s kind and helpful, and he’s great in bed.”

Matthew scowled. “You would have to throw that in. Are you sure he’s not after your money?”

Derek was sure. Chance had gone into the pharmacy and purchased Jaden’s medicine and hadn’t asked to be reimbursed. He also didn’t have an extravagant lifestyle. He just went out with his friends on some nights like most people their ages did. “You did a background check on him. Did you find any discrepancies?”

Matthew shook his head. “‘He’s clean. He’s even paid off his college loan.”

“Then why can’t you be happy for me? I like Chance and he makes me laugh.”

“I am happy for you,” Matthew said. “I just don’t want you to get hurt. Are you sure he’s going to be there for you for the next eighteen years?”

“How can I be sure of that? He does get along with Jaden. Chance plays with him and the man sat up all night with him last night when Jaden was running a fever.”

“You let him spend the night?”

Derek nodded. “What else could I do? I was exhausted. Jaden has kept me up a couple of nights teething and I’m forever in meetings. He was there for me and not once did he complain.”

“That doesn’t mean he’s the one you should spend the rest of your life with. It could all be a ploy.”

“Maybe, but that’s a risk I’m willing to take,” Derek said.

“Okay,” Matthew said. “I’ll cut you some slack. Go meet the man’s family.”

Derek chuckled. “I don’t really need your permission, but thanks.” He and Matthew finished their lunch and returned to work.

“Are you out of your mind, man?” Adam asked Chance. “Why are you taking this guy home to meet your family?”

“Because I’m in love with him,” Chance answered.

David clapped. “I knew it. I had a feeling that this Derek was the right guy for you. When can we meet him?”
