Nick smiled. “If you’re up to it, we are having a kind of ‘open house’ for friends and family to meet Abigail.”

“Pretty name,” Nayome smiled. “Does Cindy really want your ex showing up to that?”

“It was her idea, after I told her I wanted to reach out.”

Nayome nodded thoughtfully. Maybe it was time to bury the hatchet and move forward. “I’ll think about it, send me the details.”

Nick pulled out his cell and she heard adingon her own, as an e-mail was received.

“Sent,” Nick said, as Nayome covered her mouth and stifled a huge yawn. Chuckling, he stood up, taking a last sip of coffee. “You’re clearly wiped, I’ll go now and let you rest.”

“Thanks for stopping by.” Nayome didn’t even need to feign a genuine tone. This had been surprising, Nayome thought as she watched Nick disappear into the hallway, door shutting behind him. She had been carrying so much resentment in the background, she felt lighter having let some of it go.

She felt optimistic. Odd, that her first thought was of Bal. She wanted to hear his voice, share her good mood.

Nayome waved Nick out as he shut the door behind him. Shutting her eyes as she took a sip of hot coffee, she was taken back to that moment in the woods after the wolves had stalked her, when thousands of firefly’s had filled her to the brim with energy. The heady feeling of the power vibrating through her, until it had released, a shockwave sent out through the forest.

All of her fears, resentments and regrets had left her in that moment. She had known the feeling of lightness, for one brief moment, that was possible without being weighed down by them. And now, alone in her apartment, she felt a fragment of that lightness return. She knew she had done the right thing, hearing Nick out, taking a step forward.

The last week had been so full, so extraordinary, Nayome didn’t think she would ever be able to look at things the same way again. Would she ever feel that magic coursing through her, the way it had in the forest? Did that surge of energy exist outside Taynish?

There was so much she didn’t understand. She should have asked so many more questions, but she had got so caught up in…well…she couldn’t regret what had happened with Bal. A secret smile tugging at the corner of her mouth as she rinsed out the empty mugs in the sink. Even the memory of last night had a warm glow blossoming in her, radiating out until she felt it all the way to her fingertips.

Before she could talk herself out of it, Nayome whipped out her phone and dialed. Tapping her foot impatiently, she waited while it rang, and rang again. And again.

Beep. You’ve reached the voicemail of -

Nayome cut the call off and slammed her phone face down on the counter, embarrassment flooding in. She realized it would be late in Scotland. Bal was probably already asleep, of course he wouldn’t answer.Damn it. She should have waited to contact him, he was going to think she was stalking him, calling as soon as she landed.

Way to play it cool, Nayome.

Feeling like an awkward teenager, Nayome made her way to the bathroom. She sighed with relief as she dropped her clothes in a pile on the ground. Hopping into the shower, she let the steaming hot water wash over her, drenching her hair and easing the tension in her stiff muscles. She hoped a good scrub would wash some of the travel dust and awkwardness away, so she could get a good sleep. And tomorrow, she would get a chance to review the samples she collected.

Nayome felt a thrill at that, eager to get back to work.
