“Huh, well they must have tuned into something we missed.”

“Yeah, well no point dwelling on it,” Nayome said. “They took all our samples and reports.”

“Bummer,” James looked momentarily downtrodden, before doing a one eighty. “Well, no point crying over what could have been. I’ve got a good project in the pipeline I think you will be perfect for.”

“That’s great. Hey, James—can it wait until tomorrow?” Nayome asked hesitantly. She never asked for time off, and James looked surprised. “I think I must still be a bit jet lagged, I’m feeling really under the weather.”

Nodding, James told her to take the rest of the day and she left gratefully. When Dani approached as she was heading out, Nayome brushed off her concern, saying she had come down with a bug, but that they could catch up tomorrow.

I need to get out of here, get some air.

Nayome made a quick detour to the laboratory floor on her way out. After confirming that her test on the regeneration properties of that small sample of fungus had been confiscated, along with the rest of the data, she left the building feeling worried and defeated. Gulping in the fresh air, she started walking in a random direction, not wanting to go home yet.

She felt too restless, too unsettled to go straight home. She needed to keep moving, figure out what to do next. And where the hell is Bal?Nayome wondered, checking her phone. Blowing out a frustrated breath, Nayome started walking blindly, picking directions based on how the traffic lights changed. Reaching up to her neck, she gripped her mom’s amber necklace. The heat from her palm warmed the amber, creating a comforting sensation as she gripped it for a minute, before releasing it to rest against the skin on her chest.
