“Oh, cool. I didn’t know you were into that kind of stuff.”

“I wasn’t, but it was a good experience, trying something new.”

“Are you feeling better now?”

“Loads better. I’m sorry I missed all your messages—I can be terrible with that stuff.”

“It’s no problem.” Dani sounded light and casual, but Nayome could sense that she had hurt her feelings. Not knowing how to repair the damage, she tried changing the subject.

“So, did I miss anything at work this week? How’s Clive?”

“Oh, that,” Dani scoffed. “I caught him making out with Jenna in the coffee room. After we had been flirting all week. What a scumbag.”

“Isn’t Jenna married?”

“Yep.”

“Damn, that sucks.”

“It’s fine, I knew it was a bad idea. He was just so….hot.”

“You can do way better. And I meanwaybetter.” Nayome leaned back against the wire headboard, fluffing a pillow up behind her. It felt good to have a normal conversation.

“Any word from your smoldering Scottish man?” Dani asked gleefully, her hurt feelings seemingly pushed aside for now.

“We’ve been chatting, but nothing much to say. I don’t think anything will come of it with the distance.” Nayome didn’t have to come up with a lie there. As much as she was attracted to Bal, there was just too much standing in the way.

“Yeah, distance is tough. But…you could always try some cybersex!”

“What! I couldn’t!” Nayome laughed, surprised.

“Yeah, all the kids are doing it these days. Or so I’ve heard. Sexting, I think it’s called. At least according to my cousin who’s in college.”

“Oh my God.” Nayome let out a genuine laugh, as the conversation derailed into silly, irrelevant topics. For a moment, she even managed to forget the danger she was in.
