Nayome nodded. “Do you remember that night, when theteineflooded the forest. The night I left?”

“Of course, we celebrated for hours that night, like the old times.” Ce looked wistful, her eyes glazing over with the memory.

“Did…I thought Bal said something about filling his reserves? Like the fireflies bring energy with them?”

“Aye.”

“So if I could call them more often, would you be able to do more of your work?”

Ce’s eyes snapped to Nayome. “You called them?” She breathed.

Nayome was opening her mouth to respond when a sharp knock on the door interrupted her thought. Spine going rod straight with tension, she eyed the front door wearily.

Ce seemed unaffected by Nayome’s sudden shift in mood as she made her way leisurely to the door.

“Ah, g’evening Wynn, you’ll never guess who’s here—”

Wynn stopped dead in the entrance, eyeing Nayome coldly. Surprise shone clearly in her dark eyes, before it was replaced with anger.

Wynn stepped in front of Ce, as though shielding her from Nayome. “What are you doing back here?” She spat at Nayome, her eyes shooting daggers.

“Wynn, there’s no call for—”

“Ce, let me handle this. You’re too trusting.”

“Oh nonsense, have a seat and we can all talk. There’s an explanation for everything.”

“I don’t care what tale she has spun. Who else knows she is here?” Wynn demanded.

“Gabe and Bal are both aware, Wynn. If you would just listen—” Ceana was trying to get around Wynn, frustration creeping into her tone.

“Ce, call the twins. We should keep a close eye on her until we figure out what to do.”

“Wynn!” The impact of Ce raising her voice gave Wynn brief pause, the taller woman turning to look at Ce with eyebrows raised. “She traveled here.”

“Yes, and we need to make sure she doesn’t expose—” Wynn continued, talking over Ce.

“Wynn, you aren’t listening. Shetraveledhere. She is of our line.”

Wynn scoffed. “Impossible. Seriously Ce, you believed that?”

“I saw it.”

That had Wynn pausing, her braid whipping to the side as she swung her head to regard Nayome.

“That’s not possible,” she said again, brows furrowed. Nayome shifted uncomfortably under the intensity of the glare that was being leveled at her.

Gripping her necklace, Nayome met Wynn’s gaze head on. “It’s true.”

Wynn froze in place, her glower filling the room with animosity. Nayome could tell she was processing the information though, putting together the odd facts that likely hadn’t made sense since Nayome had shown up in her life, by the way her eyes flickered and her frown deepened.

“Even if that is the truth, she is not one of us. Her allegiances can’t be trusted.”

Ce rolled her eyes and squeezed past Wynn.

“It does explain Bal’s interest at least, why else would he waste his time chasing after someone so…” Wynn didn’t finish the thought, but Nayome could easily fill in the blanks as the woman’s eyes moved from her head to toes, derisively.Plain. Boring. Average.

“Wynn, I won’t have you being rude to our guest. This is my home, you will sit down and have a cuppa with us, or you will leave.”

Wynn’s face softened as she regarded Ce. Nayome was shocked that there was any room for warmth in the icy fortress Wynn encased herself in. But apparently, no one was fully immune to Ce’s charm.

“Fine,” Wynn agreed. “But only because I don’t trust her here alone with you.”

Nayome pursed her lips as Wynn took the seat across from her, glaring across the few feet of counter that separated them. She had no doubt Wynn could be the person who sicked federal agents on her. She had shown Nayome nothing but scorn and hostility. “Great, this will be fun,” Nayome said, not bothering to check her sarcasm.

Wynn’s smile in return was positively deadly.
