Graeme looked taken aback, but nodded. “I’m glad you had a good childhood.”

“It was. Good, that is.” Nayome shifted her weight, feeling the tension in the air as it settled on her shoulders.

Graeme felt it too, because he suddenly turned to Bal, extending a hand to the other man. “Balfor, thank you for arranging this. It’s awfully late, you both must be exhausted from the celebration.”

Bal opened his mouth to protest, brow furrowed, but Graeme continued.

“I’ll be in town for a while, Nayome…maybe we can do this again soon, over lunch?”

“Yes, that would be nice,” she said, not sure if the sentiment was genuine or not. She still felt numb with shock.

Then just as quickly as he had arrived, Graeme was gone. Bal spun around to face her after the door shut behind her father. Herfather. She wanted to deny it, but his eyes…it had been like looking in a mirror. And the necklace. It all made too much sense.

“Nayome, I screwed up. I should have told you. He was supposed to arrive earlier, before the ceremony but I should have warned you either—”

“Shh.” Nayome held up a hand to stop him, her head still spinning. “No more surprises, deal?”

“I promise,” Bal said, smiling hesitantly. “Nayome, I can’t believe how badly I misjudged that—”

“It’s alright,” Nayome said, holding up a hand to stop him. And it was. Bal was beating himself up enough, and she was sure his intention hadn’t been to pull the rug from under her. “Just no more surprises.”

Bal crossed the room in a couple of easy strides, lifting her off her feet and into his arms in a strong embrace. “No more surprises,” he agreed, which had Nayome sighing in relief. “Except…”

“What?” Nayome asked, voice full of trepidation.

“This one I think you will like,” Bal was smiling at her, with a glint in his eye that had her body responding in an instant. Nayome shifted her weight slightly so she could wrap her legs around his waist. His hands moved to cup her butt, holding her in place. Bal began walking, leading them towards the back of the house, where she knew the bedroom was. Her response to him still surprised her, body relaxing, turning to hot liquid at a single glance from him. Anticipation flooded her, chasing away the exhaustion.

“I’m changing the rule,” Nayome said a little breathlessly, as she felt herself heating up. Bal’s smile was dark, as he raked his eyes down her body, still clad in the flowy green gown. Nayome felt his eyes on her like a caress, back arching in response as his grip on her tightened, crushing her body against his.

“Oh?” he asked, pausing at the door to the bedroom.

“Bedroom surprises are an exception.”

Nayome watched as a slow smile spread across Bal’s face, and he pushed the bedroom door open. In one smooth motion, he tossed her down on the bed and Nayome squealed in surprise, laughing as she hit the soft mattress. Her laughter rang joyfully through the house, long after the door shut behind them.
