Chapter 48

‘Toby was my brother. How is that possible?’ Carys turned to her father. ‘Did you—?’

‘Of course I didn’t have an affair.’

They both turned to look at Abigail as if she had the answers.

She did. She just couldn’t quite believe it.

‘What is it, Abigail?’ Carys asked.

‘You weren’t half-siblings. It says here you were proper siblings – brother and sister.’

Hugh’s mouth dropped open. ‘Are you saying Toby was my son?’

Oliver looked from Abigail to the computer screen and back again. ‘Are you sure that’s what it says?’

‘Yes, I’m sure.’ Abigail sat there staring at the screen, thinking what she imagined everyone was thinking; the results must be wrong.

Abigail turned around and looked at Oliver. ‘I think you should check your results.’

‘You’re damn right.’

Abigail got out of the chair and watched Oliver take a seat, punching in his password and logging on. ‘Right, I’m going to compare mine with my sister’s and Toby’s.’

He sat back in the chair, studying the results. ‘This makes no sense.’

‘What does it say?’ Carys asked, leaning over his chair.

Oliver glanced at her. ‘It says you’re not my sister. We’re not siblings.’

‘Not half-siblings?’

He shook his head. ‘The results suggest we’re …’

‘We’re what?’

‘Cousins.’

‘Cousins?’ Carys and Hugh said in unison.

Hugh shook his head. ‘Are you going to believe this tosh? There must have been a mix-up with the tests. What is this website, anyway?’

He hadn’t even finished his sentence when Abigail reached the door, her coat and bag already in her hand.

Carys looked up. ‘Abigail, where are you going?’

Abigail was fishing in her bag for her car keys. She opened the door. ‘I’m going to see the one person who can tell us.’

‘The truth?’

‘About what happened that night. The night of the Great Storm.’

Hugh stepped forward. ‘What are you talking about?’

‘I’m going to see Albert, the other trustee of Daphne’s estate.. He knows.’

‘Knows what?’
