RHETT

Grace did look beautiful that night, but she should be on my arm and marrying me.

“Rhett, what are you doing here? How did you get past security?” Her eyes were wide but she didn’t seem angry or upset to see me.

“It’s no secret your engagement party was tonight, Grace. It’s been plastered everywhere.”

She folded her arms across her chest and I tried not to smirk. I was getting a glimpse of that attitude of hers that made me fall in love with her all those years ago.

“In high society, Rhett. But I didn’t think you hung around high society.”

Grace stood there barefoot and she never looked more sexy. I wanted to scoop her up in my arms and take her away somewhere I could finally make love to her like I’d dreamed about for years.

I shrugged. “I have sources. And friends. The same ones that got me past security, Princess.”

I used to call her that all the time when we were younger. At first she hated it, then she’d roll her eyes at me when I called her that, and eventually she grew to love it. I saw the corners of her mouth turn up when I just said it.

“You shouldn’t be here, Rhett. This is my engagement party.”

“I know, but I want you to hear me out, Grace.” I came closer to her and cupped her face. “I love you. I’ve always loved you. I never intended to hurt you that night. My plan was to find you and take you out of that party. We could run away together like we had talked about and no hair on your head would be harmed. Or the rest of your family. At least by me.”

A tear escaped her eye and I brushed it away with a thumb. “You’re my girl, Grace Jones. You belong to me. You always have.”

Her trembling hand came up to touch mine. “I’m engaged to another man. My father is about to be governor. We can’t do this.”

“Why the fuck can’t we? I’d give up everything for you, Grace. I’d escape with you.” I let her go and walked past her. “I have a place for us. I’ve saved up every penny I’ve earned and bought a small house on the beach for you in the Dominican. It’s not what you have now, but I could take care of you. We could raise our babies there and be happy.”

I turned around and found her crying now, hugging herself with her arms. I embraced her, holding her tight against me and stroking her hair. “You know I’m right, Grace. We belong together.”

“What the fuck is going on here?”

Grace pulled away from me quickly and gasped at the sight of her father standing there. “Just an old friend, Daddy.”

He crossed his arms and came over to us. “The fuck it is.” He got in my face. “I know who you are. I know you were hanging out with my daughter all those years ago. You guys thought you were so smart, but I knew.”

He stared at me but I wasn’t afraid and didn’t back down. I ate punks for lunch and Grace’s dad was nothing but a punk.

“It’s fine, Daddy. I was about to go inside.” She pulled at his arm, trying to get her away from me.

He pointed a finger at me. “If I ever see you sniffing around my daughter again, I will finish you. You may think you’re Mr. Tough guy, but you haven’t seen anything yet.”

Grace’s father grabbed her roughly by the arm, and she let out a cry. I moved towards her but she shook her head at me. “It’s fine, Rhett. Thanks for the congratulations.”

She gave me a small smile before her father started dragging her back to the party. I clenched my fists at my sides, fighting against everything in me not to go after her. Now was not the time to cause a scene. I told her how I felt and I could only hope she felt the same and would find a way to be with me.

It wasn’t long before security was at my side to drag me out of the party. I shrugged them off, and walked out willingly. I didn’t want to do anything more to hurt Grace.

I was so disappointed when I didn’t hear from her for weeks. There wasn’t much more I could do to convince her I loved her and would wait until the end of time for her.

Then one night, there was a knock on my door. When I opened it, there stood Grace in leggings and a sweatshirt, wearing her glasses and her hair up in one of her sexy messy buns.

She didn’t say a word, jumping into my arms instead.
