DAISY LAZARUS

Daisy was in the suit.

In all her years, in all her time, she’d never expected to be wearing it. She still didn’t like it. It was temporary and only to get Parker off her case about needing the Kevlar-like protection. She scowled at him from across the operations room table as he vehemently argued with Flint and Mary about her staying at Lazarus House until she was recovered.

She appreciated him wanting to protect her, but she knew her own limits, and was about to tell him so when her cell phone rang. She picked it up from the operations table and walked into the weapon’s room, ready to sync a katana to her back. Alice had already left to help her Sinner sisters with the attack at Syndicate Tower.

“Hello?”

“Daze.” Axel’s voice came through with loud background noise. Banging. Shouting. She went on high alert.

“Axel? Are you okay? Where are you calling from?”

“I’m fine.” A drilling noise. He cursed then shouted at someone to wait two seconds before returning to her. “Elena texted and said you’re heading out. I told you to stay. You almost died. Why can’t you just stay and—”

“I’ll be fine. I’m finally in a place where I have the freedom to do what I want and feel good about it. They need me.”

He growled, “Then wait for me to come to you.”

“Don’t come. Your people need you.”

“Daisy!” he snapped. “You’re my people.”

Parker tapped her on the shoulder, eyes fiery, jaw flexing. So the argument didn’t go well, and from the look of restraint on his face, he’d heard her declaration to Axel. She waited for Parker’s bossy demand to stay, but he surprised her. “Let’s go. Griffin and Wyatt have already left. The rest should be there.”

She nodded then found a katana on the rack as she returned to Axel. “I have to go. I love you.”

Silence.

“Did you hear me?” she blurted. “I love you.”

“Why are you saying that now?” His tone was tight.

“I have to go. Be safe.”

She cut the call. The last thing she needed was for her mate to be where the danger was thickest. It was good he was at his job. He was doing something worthy. She synced the sword to her back, grabbed a bullwhip, and added a few shuriken and daggers to the utility belt at her hip. Pigeon had done well with the suit design and tech. She had to admit the suit was handy and even considered bringing her baseball bat. Someone had put it in the weapon’s room. But it was time to be the villain again—the villain in Julius’s world. She would not be pulling any punches.

“Hurry up!” Parker bellowed from the hallway.

“I’m coming.” She jogged out, but Mary blocked her.

Daisy pulled up short.

“I have to be there,” Mary said with urgency.

“So go.”

Mary’s eyes flashed. “He can’t make me stay. Flint understands.”

Daisy’s eyes narrowed. Why was Mary telling her this? It was weird. Since when did Mary need permission. And then Daisy remembered the look in Mary’s eyes when they’d been upstairs.

“You saw something in your vision,” she said. “You didn’t elaborate upstairs, and Parker thinks it’s something to do with the Sinners, but it’s not, is it? Just promise me one thing… none of us are getting left behind this time.”

Mary’s eyes glistened and she nodded. “You have my word. Everyone you love will be safe.”

“Then you have to be there,” Daisy agreed. “To do what you need to do. I’ll back you up.”

The garage door burst open, and in rushed two of her siblings. Evan held Tony as they limped in. Blood and dirt on their faces.
