What Took You So Long?

PARKER

I pull away quickly after Eric’s lips barely touch mine. “I’m sorry, this was unexpected,” I say.

Eric stays still as he stares into my eyes. “I know, I’m sorry. I don’t usually go around kissing strangers, but I’m not sure what came over me. Sorry if that’s strange.”

I let out a nervous laugh. “It’s okay. I didn’t mind.”

Eric raises his eyebrows. “Does that mean I can steal another, but a proper one this time, before you possibly leave and wish you never saw me again?”

I hold my breath as he leans in and his lips gently brush against mine. He kisses me again without any warning. It’s warm and fast as his tongue dives into my mouth seeking the touch mine.

Eric slips his left hand around my neck, before bringing my face closer to his, while his other hand slides underneath my wet t-shirt. His touch is warm against my skin and an unexpected moan leaves my lips.

My phone buzzes in my pocket and this is just not happening. I pull away once again, with my cheeks burning and my breath ragged. “I’m sorry. I really have to go.”

“And you’re going to disappear just like I said.” Eric smiles. “Well, I suppose I’ll run into you again.”

“What if you don’t?”

Eric reaches over to the desk behind me and grabs a pen, before handing it to me. “Well, let’s make sure I’ll see you again. Write your number on my hand. I’ll call you.”

“I don’t think I should,” I say, looking up into his eyes. “It’s not a great idea.”

Eric smiles. “So, here’s the problem. You don’t think you should, but will you?”

“Just as friends,” I tell him as I take the pen and scribble my number across his wrist.

“Just as friends,” Eric agrees. “I hope you enjoy the rest of your evening, Parker.”

“You too,” I say, backing away from him.

Something brushes past my leg and I look down to see a fat ginger cat rubbing its head against my ankle before it falls over on its back to get petted. The cat’s eyes are huge and dark green.

“My roommate,” Eric says.

I choke out a laugh. “This is your roommate?”

“Hey, respect Jane Austen.” Eric reaches over to scratch underneath the thick folds of her chin.

“You named her after a literary great?” I ask.

“Yeah, I find it more charming than just naming your cat some other boring name like Furball that millions of other people will probably name theirs,” Eric explains.

“It’s cute.” I continue to walk backward. “I really hope I can meet Jane Austen again.”

Eric’s eyes quickly find mine. “Which means you’ll have to get permission from her owner first, which also means I’ll get to see you again.”

“Or maybe I’ll just kidnap her,” I tell him with a stupid grin plastered across my face. “Bye.”

I leave his studio apartment and rush down the flight of stairs as my phone buzzes with another message and I don’t have to look at it to know it’s Hudson.

Once I’m outside, I walk close to the building to shelter myself from the rain.

I walk near the pavement and hail a cab. My phone starts buzzing like crazy as I get into the cab, so I pull it out of my pocket to see Hudson calling.
