Nightmare

PARKER

“So, you are certain that you locked the door before you left for this party?” Officer Dawson asks again as he inspects my room.

It’s a little past midnight and Lex is in the living room freaking out and I think like I’m going to be really sick. I think the effects of the molly are starting to wear off and I’m not feeling so hot.

“Yeah, I definitely locked it. I always check before we leave,” I tell him.

Officer Dawson doesn’t look too convinced as he glances back at me, a frown settling in between his thick eyebrows, and his mustache twitches as if it has a life of its own. “Did you and your friend back there partake in drugs or alcohol for recreational use?”

Of course, blame it on the drugs.

My first thought is to lie and I do, but Officer Dawson offers an unbelieving glare. “So y’all didn’t have anything at all?”

“We might have had a beer or two,” I say quietly. “But that was at the party, not before.”

“You don’t think we did this, right?” Lex walks in behind me.

“This is not blood. It doesn’t have the same consistency as blood. It’s just red paint and it was probably a prank,” Officer Dawson says. “Do you guys know of anyone that might have done this? We could serve them with a warning so that they won’t try something like this again.”

“We don’t engage with a very big circle of friends, so no,” I tell him.

He nods and looks around the room once more before exhaling. “Well, there’s nothing more I can do if I don’t have any more to go on.”

The only thing I can think of is the phone calls, but that can’t be related to this, right? I stopped receiving those calls for almost a month now.

Besides, I doubt he’d believe that just after we told him we had beers at the party.

“What about fingerprints and lab testing?” Lex asks.

Officer Dawson gives her a long, hard stare. “This is not Law & Order or Hawaii Five-O. If anything else comes up and I doubt that, you can call the local police precinct and there’ll be an officer to help. Have a good night.”

“Thanks for nothing,” Lex mutters as she slams the door shut after he leaves. “Hawaii Five-O my ass. What the hell does he think of himself?”

“He’s just doing his job,” I tell her as I stare at the wall.

“Yup, and he’s also laughing at us right now.” She exhales noisily. “He’s not so hot anyway.”

I glance at Lex and she looks at me, the tension in the air is thick. Her blue eyes are swimming with worry. “Maybe it’s a prank?” She sounds too hopeful, but I’m grateful for her.

“Maybe,” I say.

Her eyes are filled with fear and I’m pretty sure I look just as terrified because I certainly feel the tingling inside of me.

“Well, we’re having a sleepover in my room,” Lex says. “There’s no way I’m letting you sleep in this fucking room.”

She has a shower and then I take one after, feeling sick to my stomach about the fact that there’s nothing else in the apartment that has been touched. Just my room. What the hell does that mean? Someone was in my room.In my room.

I try to conjure up an image of a person sick enough in the head to break into our apartment and get into my room, before deciding to paint that shit all over my room wall.

The hot water burns my skin as it cascades down my back and when I get out of the shower, I quickly kneel over the toilet and empty all my stomach’s contents.

My stomach lurches again and I want to throw up, the bile rises in my mouth, burning the back of my throat, but there’s nothing left to throw up.Fuck.I feel horrible.

I dry myself down, brush my teeth and then pull on a faded grey t-shirt withINXSprinted in black across the chest area, that I’d taken from Hudson when I stayed a night at the penthouse.
