Hmm, this really can’t be good,I think as I quietly stand above her. This is going to be very confrontational. I should just go back in. Or maybe I can try and take it out of her hands and check what’s inside to assess the damage.
I reach over and take the edges of the envelope and pull, but Parker’s eyes snap open and those wild grey eyes are bloodshot and staring right back at me, challenging me. She’s been crying too. Great.Just fucking great.
She pulls the envelope back and stands up, wobbling as she does and I reach out to steady her, but she pulls away like she can’t stand me touching her.
“Did your conscience actually feel bad and then you decided to open up?” she asks, a lingering tone of anger in her voice. “Oh wait, do you even have a conscience to start with?”
The throbbing in my temples return. This is going to be a very long night and I don’t even know what I’ve done this time.
“I’m sorry. I was asleep,” I say.
“So you just woke up, opened the door, and decided to grab this from me?” She holds up the envelope.
“No.”
“Why do you lie so much?” Her voice rises.
“Parker, not now. Please.”
She presses her palm against my chest and pushes me back into the apartment, before slamming the door shut behind her.
“No, now is a very good time,” she says, turning to me.
