High On Him

PARKER

When we arrive at The Velvet Lounge, the place is not what I anticipated it to be.

Because we’re meeting Matt, I assumed a restaurant or small bar or something along those lines, but The Velvet Lounge turns out to be a really cool nightclub in Manhattan’s upper east.

It’s shrouded in a purple glow when we enter after getting crown ink stamps on our wrists and Hudson flashes his ID to the bouncers.

The expansive dancefloor is filled with young couples dancing intimately and a glass bartop with elegantly-dressed bartenders throwing bottles of tequila in the air, whilst a fire dancer dressed in a leotard suit balances his fiery hula hoops to entertain a crowd near the bar.

It’s gorgeous, but the thing that catches my eye the most is an enormous mirror covering a dark, purple wall ahead of us.

“What do you think?” Hudson presses his lips against the side of my neck.

“It’s pretty cool,” I tell him.

“It’s up for sale on the market,” he says, slipping his arm around my waist as we walk down three steps and head right into the dancefloor. “Maybe I’d buy it.”

“I thought your family only invested in hotels?”

“Sure, they do. But this would be my own thing. It could be ours,” Hudson says over the beat of the music.

“What about you applying to firms after graduation?” I ask.

Hudson chuckles. “Are you always going to have an itinerary for the rest of your life or are you going to let go and do whatever you want?”

“I don’t have an itinerary,” I say. “I just like having things done in a certain way. Besides, what would you do with a nightclub anyway?”

“Lots,” he says. “You have no idea how strong the party game is in Manhattan. It would be fun.”

“You should do it if you want to,” I tell him.

Hudson leads me over to a section where there are private booths with richly colored maroon seats.

Matt is there with his arm casually around the shoulder of a blonde-haired girl who can’t be any older than me, sitting at the booth Hudson and I head towards them.

“Hey!” Matt waves his hand at us as we arrive at the table and slide into the leather seat across from them. “I almost thought you guys weren’t coming.”

“We almost didn’t,” Hudson says, placing his hand on my thigh.

Matt’s eyes dart from Hudson to me and then back. “Why not?”

“Just got caught up,” Hudson says massaging my thigh, moving his fingers up and down in a teasing way.

I look at him, but he simply smiles ahead at Matt. He’s teasing me, so I take a deep breath and try to ignore the fact that he’s touching me. I can do this. I can resist him.

“Parker, this is Taylor, my fiancé, and Taylor this is Parker, Hudson’s girlfriend,” Matt introduces us.

Taylor smiles at me warmly and holds out her hand, so I shake it and smile back.

“It’s good to meet you, Parker,” she says. “Now we all know who’s keeping Hudson away so much these days.”

She laughs and a shrill, glassy sound accompanies it. An awkward moment of silence pursues and Taylor’s cheeks grow pink as she quickly lifts her drink and takes a sip from the straw.

“It’s good to meet you too,” I say. “And it’s really good to see you again, Matt.”
