“Do you want change?”

“I don’t know.” She shrugged. “While some of the rules for the Grays are too extreme, I was never hungry in the Caves. I had a purpose. I didn’t know sadness or strife. Even though it was forbidden, I even had some friends.”

“You’d go back if you had the choice?” I surmised.

“Yes.”

I wouldn’t, but only because of what I’d experienced with Sebastian. If the choice came down to being a breeder like Brunna had been or being imprisoned, I’d miss the Caves too.

“Silas is going to kill the commander. He wants to use me as bait to lure him out.”

“That doesn’t surprise me. Silas has hated the commander for a long time.”

“What happens if he succeeds?”

“Silas thinks he can take over.”

I caught a key word. “Thinks? You have a different perspective?”

“The Cabal chooses the commanders. The Cabal is who marks us.”

“And who are the Cabal?”

She shrugged. “No idea.”

“I have to stop Silas. Will you help me?”

Silas stepped back inside, a length of rope in his hand. “Brunna doesn’t dare because, if she does, her little boy will pay the price, won’t he?”

“I thought he lived on the surface?” I asked, my confusion showing.

“He does. But children are fragile things, aren’t they, Brunna?”

“You’re a sick fuck,” she muttered, storming out.

The threat shocked me. “She’s right. You are sick. Violence is wrong.”

“Violence gets shit done. Hands.” He pointed and twitched the rope.

Being bound meant being unable to protect myself. “I won’t fight you or try to hurt you.”

He snorted. “As if you could. This is to ensure you don’t take off on the way to the rendezvous. You should have seen how quickly your commander replied to my note.”

“Don’t do this.” I resorted to begging.

“I see it’s a good thing I brought a gag too.”

Turned out, I lied. I did fight.

And lost.
