He raises his eyebrows, and everyone smiles.

‘I don’t, I’m sorry,’ I say. ‘I mean, obviously I know quite a few Davids. But none are from Cardiff, or have lived there, as far as I know. It’s not much to go on.’

‘Tell me about it,’ says Bryn drily.

‘Any more questions before we let Mary go?’ asks Steph. A few seconds of silence are followed by shakes of the three heads on the screen.

‘OK. Thank you, Mary, for coming in. We’ll be keeping in very close contact with you, of course – in fact, I think Jess wants to arrange a meeting as soon as possible, right, Jess?’

I look over at the FLO, who nods unsmilingly.

‘I do. And I also need to ask you another few questions before you go. Another alibi check, for the Birmingham murder, I’m afraid,’ she says.

‘Sure,’ I say. ‘No problem.’

‘Thank you, Mary, for understanding. And please, please let us know as soon as possible if you think of anything, no matter how seemingly small or insignificant, that might link you and our Oxford and Birmingham victims, OK? Or if anything at all out of the ordinary happens in the coming days. We’re working blind here, but for some reason it does seem that the killer has reached out to you with those warnings. So we need your help.Anything, OK?’

‘OK,’ I say. ‘I’ll do my best.’

‘Thank you. Right, we’ll say goodbye then. Jess will have that quick chat and then see you out.’

There’s a chorus of ‘bye, Mary’ and ‘thank you’ from the faces on the monitor, and I give them an awkward wave.

‘And as DCI Warden said –anything, Mary,’ says Linda Lake. ‘Like Priya, I’m certain that there has to be a link between our victims. If we can find that, we can find the why.Whythey were killed. And if we find the why, we might just find thewho.’
