Could the real reason she was late have been because she’d been trying to get back from Cardiff in the early morning traffic?

I feel faint again, black spots dancing in front of my eyes, and I reach for the wall with one hand, trying to steady myself. Steph is still talking, and I force myself to focus on what she’s saying.

‘That spyware on your computer – the techs said it came in via email, didn’t they? You and Jess exchanged emails all the time. And she must have sent that letter in the post too. She knew you were thinking of going abroad and she needed to stop you. She needed youhere, where she could get to you. And she was so insistent on getting that cheese for Pete – she must have put some sort of drug in it, knowing Pete would eat it and you wouldn’t. It was a way to make sure he was indisposed so that she could come in here and kill you without him getting in the way. She knew you’d let her in. It all makes sense, Mary. I’m so sorry. So very sorry. But I’m almost certain—’

My legs buckle.

But why? Why? And … oh God, oh God …

‘Pete,’ I say weakly. ‘She’s up there now, on her own with Pete.’

‘WHAT? She’s with him? Why didn’t you say? I assumed she was in the kitchen!’

Steph’s eyes widen, and the look of horror in them makes my stomach lurch.

‘No, she’s upstairs too. She had her hands on his neck as I left the room, and I thought she was just checking his pulse but … what if … what if …?’

‘Christ. She’s going to try and kill him too, isn’t she?’

Steph gives me another anguished look, then turns and runs for the stairs.
