Chapter 9

Cahill

What an amazing day I have had with Sophie. Driving to Bray, listening to her song choices, a lovely walk in the sun beside the sea, a gorgeous picnic, her dancing, and the walk back. Then it goes tits up when some fucker follows me. But when Sophie just sat there and sang to me, it was the most amazing moment ever. She felt relaxed enough around me to let me hear her sing, and I enjoyed it. I was slightly upset when I lost the car tailing us and had to go home because I knew once we got there she would stop.

Ruairi would be taking the piss out of me for the way I am thinking about her, but I can’t help it, she has my attention. She doesn’t want money, power or security, she seems to want the simple life and to get to know me. Hardly anyone knows about my mam and sister beside a handful of people, and there I was today spilling my family history with her over a picnic. Who would have thought it, but she did something to me. I wanted her to fear me but still want me. I want her. I can see myself falling for her if I spend more time with her. She would make a great wife to a mafia boss. She has her head screwed on, and I bet she would be a great mother to our kids. Wow! Where did that thought come from? Kids? Slow down Cahill. Right, I need to get my head in the game. I need to know who was following us and why? As I am about to call Ruairi, he comes wandering into the office, with so little urgency.

“What happened today?” I ask him.

“Shipments went well. The restaurants were busy for Sunday lunch. The casino is grand. Money is flowing in from all the right places. Done a quick scan of the loans, I have a few calls to make tomorrow. Wanna come to the bar?”

“I might need to come and let off some steam.”

With a glint in Ruairi’s eye, he asks me, “Woman problems? You haven’t sampled her yet?” I want to throat punch him.

“No. Not woman problems. I am trying to work out who was following me home today. And who knew where we were.” Ruairi sits up straight. That got his attention.

“Following you? Are you sure? I only knew where you went today. Even Jones thinks you went to the zoo, he might ask at dinner about it.”

“Well, a red Seat Leon FR was following me. It took nearly forty minutes to lose the fucker. Even Sophie noticed something was up. But I don’t know if they were following for me, or trying to get to Sophie. Has any of the other families said anything? The Italians we met on Friday? Are they saying anything about the lass?”

“To be honest, Cahill, no one is talking about the lass. I don’t think anyone saw her at the warehouse, only Jonathon and Liam, and that was a good thing. But no one else has said anything, not even Liam after what Sophie did to Jonathon. Liam has been winding up Jonathon but not when anyone is around to hear it. They both know she is innocent, so they don’t want to put her in any danger.”

“Then who the fuck was after us? There was a pipe bomb atmygates, and a car followedme! Who the fuck is stupid enough to come after me?” I am fuming. Why don’t we have the answers? How am I meant to protect my family if I don’t know who I am fighting?

“I will go speak to the Garda we have on the pay roll and see if they have heard anything first thing tomorrow. There isn’t much I can do now. Let’s have a drink and see who we are visiting tomorrow.”

After a few hours with Ruairi and sorting the business out I am ready for dinner. Ruairi heads on out, skipping dinner. I don’t ask where he is going. As I go to head downstairs, I notice Sophie’s door is open and can smell her scent of sweetness already, she must be waiting for me. I walk down to the next level barefoot, still dressed in my clothes from this morning, I didn’t have time to change. I am sure Sophie won’t mind at all.

I get to the bottom of the stairs and can smell freshly made bread and stew. Yes! A good hearty meal tonight, not that pasta crap. Sophie is standing there looking out of the dining room window at the back garden.

I am taken aback by her beauty. She is barefoot as well. She’s wearing skinny jeans that stop above her ankles, her top is a little lace strappy thing tucked into her jeans, showing a little skin through it, she has her hair pinned on the right side in a curl or wave look, stud earrings, and bare arms with just a simple watch on. She has a glass of pink gin in her hand.

I walk up behind her, kiss her bare left shoulder, and can’t help but inhale her scent. She smells amazing, I could bottle this. She shivers under my touch, then I catch a glimpse of something behind her ear. Is that stars?

“What is this I have found, Sophie?” She knows I am talking about her tattoo.

“Pixie dust, like tinker bell fromPeter Pan. I know its childish, but I love it. Simple and small.” I can see the blush creeping up her skin.

“Is there any more I can find?” She shakes her head and laughs.

“No, no more tattoos, one is enough for me. My mum would kill me if she found out I had this one, never mind anymore.”

I hoped she might have had more for me to find. Maybe she will get more, never say never. She hasn’t seen all of mine yet. I have one more on me. I wonder what she will think of it when she finds it.

“Well, I like it and I won’t stop you getting more on your body. I would love to find them.”

She’s saved by dinner being served. Jones places the bread rolls and grabs our bowls of stew. I see Sophie looking about her.

“What are you looking for, doll?”

“Red sauce.”

I nearly spit my drink out. Tomato sauce in stew, who is this girl?

“You can ask Jones, I’m not. His stew is amazing, you should try it without ketchup. Also, who has ketchup in stew?”

“Me. I will ask Jones.”
