“Good evening, Mr. Traynor. I am Mr. Evans, but you can call me Harry. I think we got off on the wrong foot. I didn’t mean to harm you. I wanted my daughter away from a thug. I am a thug too and didn’t want her involved in anything like this, but then Sophie met her mother, her mother informed me how well Sophie is looking, how excited she was about this project, which is why I stopped the attacks, and tried to get myself down here to see her.”

I look at the man. “Office now.” I walk toward the office and text Ruairi to keep an eye on the women. I don’t trust this man at all.

We get into the office, and just as Harry turns around, I slam him up against the wall.

“You expect me to believe that shit show of a story?” I push a little harder against his fat neck. “If, and it’s a big fucking if, if you are Sophie’s father like you claim, why now? Are you trying to get at her for money? Are you trying to ruin her or my reputation? What’s the end game here? And what the fuck is Jonathon working with you for?”

I know I am red in the face, my face flushes from pure and utter rage, never mind Harry. I drop him and he slumps against the wall.

Coughing he splutters out, “I deserve that. But I am Sophie’s father. I haven’t been in her life because I am sure you are aware I am not a great man. I couldn’t protect her, but you can, so I thought I could rekindle or least try to. I don’t want anything from her. If she sends me on my merry way, I will go, and won’t hold it against her. She is her own woman and can make her own choices. You can ask her mother, Siobhan, she will confirm who I am.”

“How do I know you aren’t blackmailing the woman or hurting her?” I snap back. Honestly, what does he take me for?

“I would never hurt Siobhan. I moved her and Sophie away to keep them safe. I have many enemies too. You asked why Jonathon was working with me. He wasn’t working for me in a sense, he is Sophie’s older half-brother and he wanted to keep an eye on her. He has done for years, well since she moved to Dublin. He always says how boring her life is, she never had any boys, or doesn’t really go out at night, or get blocked, and her favorite spot is the library. I know Sophie doesn’t know that Jonathon is her brother, they never spoke until he had to take her to you. I heard she landed him a good punch.” He smiles, with pride on his face.

Wait, Jonathon is her half-brother? I turn to Liam, did he know? But from his face this is the first he has heard of it.

“Why wouldn’t Jonathon just tell us she is his sister? He knows we don’t hurt women.”

“I don’t know why he didn’t tell you. You will have to ask him yourself. Since Siobhan got back from the coffee meeting with Sophie I haven’t spoken to Jonathon. I know Sophie is happy, so I thought I would try another way to get to see her, and here I am tonight.” Harry smiles widely, as if that will make everything better.

“Wait… you didn’t try to have her kidnapped that day at McCarthy’s?”

“God, no! No, no, Siobhan was going for coffee to see for herself how Sophie was doing. I know they spoke briefly about myself. Siobhan was trying to get me to back off and stay out of Sophie’s life. She was happy. I was scared you would get my daughter killed. Did someone try to kidnap my daughter?” Harry’s face turns menacing, as if he would go to war.

Liam and I look at each other, if Jonathon wasn’t trying to take Sophie under any orders, then why?

“You know that Jonathon’s mother passed away from cancer a couple weeks ago?”

I need to see how much they speak to each other.

“Sandra passed? What, she had cancer? Jonathon never told me! He didn’t ask for any help. I would have helped. I didn’t love Sandra. I was young and foolish, but when I saw Siobhan, I knew she was the one for me. How has Jonathon been? That would have been tough on him.” He looks down at the ground defeated. You can tell he cared for the woman.

“I haven’t seen or spoke to Jonathon since the McCarthy episode. I thought he went into hiding with you to plan something for tonight.” I might as well lay my cards down. I do believe this man is Sophie’s father, he looks like her a little around the eyes and mouth. I’m usually a good judge of character, expect for Jonathon.

“I don’t think he would do anything to harm Sophie, he probably needs time, let it sink in about his mother. He will come round guys. Do you think I could now maybe join the party and have a look around? No one from the north knows I’m here, my guys think I’m in Muff seeing Siobhan, which is where I am heading soon. I just want to see my baby girl in action, and maybe say hi. What do you think are the odds of that happening?”

I don’t say it out loud, but no fucking chance is he speaking to Sophie tonight. I can let her know he was here and arrange for something another time, on my terms.

“How about we join the party, you can watch from a distance, and I will see what I can do about Sophie, but I am not a betting man Mr. Evans, don’t get your hopes up about speaking to her tonight.” With that said Liam goes to do the checks, make sure everything is running smoothly and there’s no hiccups. I lead Harry out to the front lobby. I do a quick tour of the casino to show Harry how amazing his daughter is. Once I drop Harry at the bar with Smithy, I head over to find Ruairi before I go back to the ladies. I talk to a few men on the way, and everything is going smoothly, everyone is happy. I see Marco has hit the tables playing blackjack, and Lauren is sitting next to him laughing at everything he says. This is not good. Ruairi will fucking kill him if he touches her. As I am walking back, I don’t see Sophie. I hope she is doing her rounds, talking to people and it’s not me being paranoid.

Ten minutes pass and I still don’t see her. I walk over to Marco and Lauren.

“Good evening. Lauren, I was just asking, have you seen Sophie or know where she was going?” I smile trying to act calm. I feel Marco tap my arm. He is listening and ready to help.

“Awe. Are you missing her?! Young loves dream.” She laughs. I am getting impatient. “She was heading back to the kitchen to check on the food rounds that are due or something like that. But it was the kitchens. I think she took Aoife with her.”

I turn and head to the kitchens to look for the girls. When I find my sister, she is crying on Liam. What the fuck did he do? I don’t need more shit.

“Calm down, sweetheart. I can’t make out what you are saying. I will get your brother now. I just need you tell me what happened and why you are crying.” Liam is rubbing her arm trying to calm her.

Marco is beside me. “What is going on, Cahill?”

“I don’t know yet, Marco. Stay put. I know I will need you.”

I walk over to them. Aoife spots me over Liam’s shoulder and cries harder. Oh fuck, who do I need to kill?

“Aoife, what is going on? Who has hurt you?” I growl while I check her over. I see no cuts, bruises, or scratches.
