“I fucking swear to you, Emmie. I’ll never lie to you again. I know it’s an easy thing to say, but I’m going to figure out a way to prove to you that everything I tell you, every confession I make, no matter how hard or painful, will be true.

“I live in a fucked-up world, but you get that more than anyone I’ve ever met. I can’t promise you a life of sweetness, of peace. It’s going to be chaotic, and dark, and downright ugly at times, but I’ll always tell you everything. All the twisted, fucked-up—”

“I get it,” she says, interrupting me. “I was never destined for that nice, idealistic life anyway. I’ve got Cirillo and Reaper blood running through my veins. My life was always going to be messy and painful.”

“How are you so perfect?” I mutter, unable to process how I found this incredible woman in my life.

Her sad laugh fills the air. “I’m far from that, Theo.”

“To me, you are. To everyone who loves you, you are.”

“Who are you?” she whispers, studying me as if this is the first time she’s ever really seen me. To be fair, it might be.

“Your husband.”

I surge forward, slamming my lips down on hers and sending a wave of bubbly water sloshing over the edge of the tub.
