CHAPTER NINE

Brigham

I hated having to leave her the next morning without a word, but I received an unexpected phone call from Graham that couldn’t be ignored. He would not call me without a good reason since he knew I was spending the weekend with Ava. I left Ava a note, really tempted to just say fuck it when I saw her beautiful sleeping self cuddled up in the covers, but I knew I wasn’t going to be able to do that right now.

I met Graham down by the docks where we normally deal with people who betray us. My eyebrows furrowed in slight confusion, wondering who we could be dealing with since I haven’t heard anything for a while. Graham can be a reasonable person when he wants to be, especially now that he’s been with Evelyn. But piss him off, and you can tell how cruel and sadistic he can really be.

“Graham!” I called to him, seeing him leaning against the table, looking really pissed off, “what’s going on?”

Graham jerked his head slightly, motioning to the men on the ground on their hands and knees, “some men caught these bastards trying to steal from us and give the enemies our intel. They won’t speak though no matter what I do, so I figured you might be able to get a rise out of them.”

I couldn’t help the grin that spread across my face, “I’d be delighted to.”

I reached into my pocket, pulling out the switchblade that I always have there. Torture has always been my specialty, and seeing the fear in their eyes was something that I always revel in - as terrible as that might sound. They knew exactly what I am capable of. I’m sure they’ve either seen it or heard the stories. I’m just not one anyone should dare mess with because I can easily ruin their lives with a simple cut.

There’s so much a little cut can really do.

“Boys, you really might want to start talking.” I murmured, crouching down in front of them as I dragged the blade along the smooth cheek of one of their faces, not enough to cut them, but enough to prove my point, “I can make this simple and easy if you just work with us. I really don’t want to have to hurt you without reason. But-”

I dragged the blade down his neck, very carefully over that little artery that would cause him to bleed to death.

“I really don’t like having to come to do this on a day I was supposed to be off.” I growled, glaring down at the bastards, “I had a woman in my bed, you see, someone that I’d very much would’ve preferred to be doing right now instead of this. So, please answer the question so I can go about my day.”

I thought I was being nice, giving each of them a way out so I wouldn’t have to kill them, but it was quickly spoiled. The little bastard had the balls to spit at me like he had some kind of power over me. I could’ve been nice and let him get away with that one, but I wasn’t going to be that nice today.

With a quick, fluid motion, I drove the blade into his neck, loving the gurgling sounds escaping his lips as his mouth and lungs filled with blood as I cut into his artery. I could’ve made it last longer by leaving the blade in his neck, but I ripped it out, blood splattering everywhere as his body hit the ground, a pool of blood surrounding him as his body quaked, dying a quick death. I did not feel bad one bit, having done this more times than I could honestly count.

“Now,” I turned my eyes to the other two men, “who’s next?”

It didn’t take but a few seconds for them to come clean about everything, telling us what we needed to know. I sighed, rising to my feet as I saw the blood coating my clothing, wondering if I should go home and change my clothes before going back…

Did I want Ava to see the truth about me?

Short answer.

Yes.

Am I afraid?

A little bit.

This might be the stupidest thing I’ve ever done.
